Bassanio arrives with an entourage at Portia's palazzo in Belmonte to seek his fortune in hopes of wedding her, if he so chooses correctly the casket containing her portrait -- a condition willed by her deceased father to select her husband. From Francis Bacon's four centuries old comedy "The Merchant of Venice" (1596).
