Hi everyone!
Thank you all so much for your wonderful comments, I’ve loved reading through them!
I just wanted to clear a couple things up…
Firstly, a lot of you are mentioning that your surprised that certain Russian classics didn’t make this list. That’s because this is a ranking of just the Russian books I read in 2021 alone! I have read other amazing Russian books (Crime and Punishment for example) in past years, which would most certainly have made this list! I love your enthusiasm, and I am so grateful to have all of your recommendations!

Secondly, it seems that a lot of you are surprised by my calling “The Overcoat” by Gogol “funny.” I did greatly sympathize with Akaky Akakievich, and felt horrible for what he went through, and how he was treated cruelly by others. I can’t really explain why, but I just found Gogol’s writing a bit humorous. This may be due to my having listened to the audiobook where the narrator expressed scenes in a certain way. After hearing/reading all your thoughts, I look forward to a physical (not audiobook) read of “The Overcoat” in the future. This way I can pay more attention to the emotional impact and not the narration/performance of the story. I hope this cleared things up!
:)
So happy to be among so many other readers who are also passionate about Russian literature!
Sending you all my best wishes,
Carolyn :)

I swear by Dead Souls. But it doesn't translate well into English, and it's difficult reading in Russian for a non-native reader of Russian, because Gogol uses a lot of obscure and obsolete words.

“Hero of our time” was my first book, that I read with pleasure, because our Russian school forced us to read them a lot and I though they are boring and always read them in briefly, just to know and answer at school. I have never thought that it would be that good. Omg, since than I am truly in love with Russian literature and literature in general ;) ♥️

I suppose you didn’t really enjoy “woe from wit” just because it’s a book of classism and not realism or romantisme. It was created with many rules that made it not top realistic. The character are mostly not complicated and interesting.
I see “woe from wit” as a great book for its time, but not for now.
Sorry for my English, I am from Russia so I have probably made some mistakes 😅❤️

In "Woe from Wit" Griboedov (Mushroomeater - ov:)) used a lot of word combinations, which after transformed into very popular aphorisms in russian language. Story in "WfW" is weak.

Kolyma tales are a heart breaking, very difficult read about Syberia.
On the entirely diifferent side I'd recommend you reading Generation P by V.Pielewin. A fantastic book, different than anything I've ever read.

"Resurrection" by Leo Tolstoy is like putting before Russia as a government the choice between the Holy Bible and prison systems which obviously communism was going to adopt for millions of their population.

"A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
"In the First Circle" by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
"An Island Hell" by S.A. Malsagoff
"The Gulag Archipelago, 1918-1956: an Experiment in Literary Investigation" by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
"A Confession" by Leo Tolstoy
"Kolyma Tales" by Varlam Shalamov

Aside from the confession that Christianity influences the world for good even if you don't believe in it, these books are the prison system of Russia as it became what over half of the Russian population experienced directly and "An Island Hell" was from the time of Lenin while the others are from the time of Stalin. Stalin slew 65 million of his own population under him. He was only surpassed by Mao slaying 104 million of his own Chinese people in communism as well. Hitler only slew 56 million, but obviously unchecked he could have surpassed these two and so thankfully WWII was ended by the allies.

TOP 10 BOOKS
0) "The Holy Bible: King James Version" copyright 1967
1) "Verbal Behavior" by Dr. B. F. Skinner
2) "Resurrection" by Leo Tolstoy
3) "The Idiot" by Fyodor Dostoevsky
4) "Fathers and Sons" by Ivan Turgenev
5) Myth Adventures - series by Robert Asprin
6) The Chronicles of Narnia - series by C. S. Lewis
7) "Vilette" by Charlotte Brontë
8) "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy
9) "A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
10) "Smoke" by Ivan Turgenev

after reading quite a bit of the best the only author coming close to Shakespeare is Walter Arnd'ts translation of Faust Part 2, Act 5. Was this brilliance Goethe or Arndt? I mention this here as I suspect that Arndt's Eugene Onegin is most probably a (large) cut above the rest, and with this young lady's recommend of the book Arndt's Onegin will be a project of mine for 2023. Arndt is known by a few and should be known by far more as a brilliant translator and poet.

NIce collection but except for Onegin, pretty superficial expositions. Saying you are not "connected" doesn't tell us anything. Same for rifling through lots of pages. Why not expound on some of the highlights and marginalia to show use what exactly you like or dislike about a book and why?

I love finding another lover of Russian literature. If you're at all interested in. Russian history as well, I cannot recommend Robert K. Massie enough, especially Nicholas and Alexandra. I started reading Russian history after I fell in love with Russian literature while doing an author study of Dostoyevsky in high school. I'm sure you've already done so since this is an old video, but Crime and Punishment is my absolute favorite book. I'm about a third of the way through Brothers Karamazov so I can't fully recommend it yet. Happy reading!
