Learning (& Muddling Through) Dwarf Fortress #1

I think the game is hard to understand but like all difficult games trying to just play is better for a month than trying to play correctly or smart. I remember when i viewed eu4 as complex and now im like its so simple whats hard to get.

Hey, so I dunno if this comes up later in the video but the reason that your earlier fortress ran out of seeds is probably that your food stockpile filled up, making it impossible to harvest your plants, which then rot and die without giving off seeds. A simple solution to have a custom stockpile near each farm dedicated to the plant(s) that are farmed in that plot. Also a good idea to have another stockpile for the plant's seeds, so your planters don't have to run far to fetch them.

i hate that we have to explain "why you should learn a complicated game" to the console mouthbreather masses out there. we get it, you still need training wheels to ride your bike. but goddamnit i'd love to see more games like this that require planning and thought.

Is the soundtrack from the video the soundtrack of the game?

How much dwarf fortress made the jump to the steam version? Is it the same game, just with a new UI and graphics layer, or is it a more in depth conversion?

To solve your plump helmet issue, go to the Labor menu, the you can click on Kitchen. Forbid plump helmet and seed from being cooked.

Sometimes I want to be a nerd so that I can play this type of games. For now Albion.

Do cats eat? Yes, but they eat vermin that spawn in automatically so you don't need to concern yourself with their upkeep.

The fucc? I fell asleep watching The Spiffing Brit and swore I woke up listening to Mark Zuccerbum playing Rimworld talking about 3 x 3 cubicles ad nauseam.

I wanted to get into this game so bad I just couldnt get into the camrea system the only thing that through me off

Wish this depth of game but with Space Haven style of graphics or at least RimWorld. After getting used to the high frame rate at RimWorld, looking the pawn here moving like an old DOS game blinking all over the place.
NGL one thing that kept me to wishlist RimWorld was the Graphics, until i bought it and enjoy the high frame rate.
Space Haven is kind of RimWorld at 2.5D pixel graphics. The picture was more palatable to me tbh compared to RimWorld, but it runs slower also. It also has not so much content compared to RimWorld.

DF now is at my wishlist but I so reluctant to buy because of the UI and the graphical presentation. The depth however, fascinated me.

Everytime i see gameplay of this it just looks like a chore to play
Its way too much micromanagement, and i feel it would kill my enjoyment unless i spend months learning it

These two guys are so dedicated to their game. This game is so intricate. Imagine each NPC being AI Agent powered! Next level.

What Id thought Id do was turn this on in the background and watch/listen but there are so many commercials. Im all for watching ads and making the people I watch money but thats a lot of flipping ads my dude.

I have never been so enamored and engrossed in a game I suck at. DF is the best!

Tip for beginners: Cooking seed-bearing plants, such as plump helmets, destroys the seeds. Cooking seeds directly, also destroys the seeds.
Disable cooking seeds. Disable cooking of seed-bearing plants. Otherwise you will run out of seeds.

I love the addition of mouse controls and built in therapist but I still prefer legacy glyphs over new fancy pixels ;3

Those storage areas were barely off and it was causing me severe anxiety.

Hope we manage to do a bit of justice to Dwarf Fortress - definitely one I'm still learning, but thanks to people in chat who are answering my questions as we go through the game. Mainly intended for total beginners, as there's still a lot I'm learning beyond the first two or so hours of gameplay in most forts - feel free to leave any tips for what to do and I'll read through them - thanks!
