I am so glad I found your video! The Canva conversation about what can and cannot be resold (on ETSY for example) is confusing because there is so much info. out there that does not get to the point. This is straight to the point and easy to understand. Thank you!

Thank you for the info Jessa. They’re policy is a real inconvenience and confusing !
I just don’t see the point in canva now ! , I pay for the monthly pro version to create educational digital products to sell. I was just about to open my Etsy shop and post my work before watching this video . Now I can’t as I’ve used nearly all the pro images 😭 An absolute waste of time , my fault for not checking properly before but I never knew they were so strict ! Disaster 😡

Great info thanks! I just read the canva policies/license agreement and am still confused. Should I avoid PRO templates if I am creating an ebook and wanted to use the templates for the pages? Purchasing the PRO templates certainly makes it appear as if I may use them as my ebook template to sell but now I am wondering. : ) I can certainly makes changes to the PRO or free templates so they are not exactly the same as they are originally if that would help.

I am having so much problems with Canva. Everything I have seen you do so far, I have not been able to do on my Canva. For example, the toggle to see the free button. I have that but there is no free button for me to click or anything anywhere. I also cannot figure out how when I hit the create and decided to do something else. I can't seem to find anything to either remove it or get out of that page. I know I am very very stupid when it comes to stuff like this, but I am wanting to try and learn this to try and start a digital online business for myself. I have bought two of your programs and some things are too fast and I know my brain is having a hard time computing thing, but that is just my brain, not the way you explain it, but I seriously need some really good help please.

So, if I want to create a digital template for Etsy,, Use the free one and do not use the Pro.. The pro is used only if we are using it for use but commercial and sold as digital?

Hi Jessa,
If I understand, we have to choose any free font (without crown) and I can use it for my templates?
I remember that I choosed a free font in canva and went in Google and paste it and I saw that it's only for personal use, so confusing!!
Can you please explain more about this point 🙏🏻
Thank you😊

What if we purchase a canva pro font license from another website and then upload the font to canva? Would customers still need a pro account to use that font in the template?

Okay so we CAN use pro templates as long as we make them our own versions and not just plagiarizing someone else’s work? Like if I wanted to use it as a base and then take everything out that belongs to canva except the layouts and I just put my own work in, would that be alright

Hi, if I take a graphic element in Canva, such as a leaf, and use it to create a flower bucket design by multiplying it, would the resulting design be considered my own creation? And would I be able to use it for commercial purposes? Thanks in advance

Hello! Thank you very much for this! I got a question. Im a pro canva user and Im planning to make document printables for sale. Is it still okay to use Canva's elements in my printables for this kind of business? I have modified some of the photos such as changing backgrounds and colors too. Hoping for tour response. Thanks!😊

I've read a ton of opposite information about this and since I'm currently setting up a new etsy shop, I emailed canva directly right after watching this video. They replied fast!
Seems like a lot of commenters on here are doing the same type business as me so I decided to post the email Canva sent me. Also I'd like your opinion on it as well.
I told Canva I am making designs that use a mix of pro content elements and then downloading the design and selling multiple copies online as digital art or t-shirts or journals, etc. I also sent an example of one of my designs.
Here's their reply:

Thank you for reaching out. I understand you wanted to check if you can sell your design in Etsy. I will be happy to provide all related information on this.

To start with, all content (photos, graphics, illustrations, stickers, fonts, videos) available in Canva is licensed under Canva’s Content License Agreement.

It means that as long as you incorporate the stock media on a design by adding elements, photos, texts, videos, or backgrounds, you can comply with the agreement and are free to do any of the items stated in Permitted Uses (Section 5) including commercial use.

There is no minimum requirement on how many elements you should add to your designs in order for them to be considered “altered”. As long as you are able to comply with the guidelines, then you’re all set!

Please do note that the use of filters, changing of colors, resizing, and cropping an element does not “alter” the element. What’s most important is that the alterations that you have utilized using different elements are noticeable when you create and end up with your own unique output.

Once you've followed all the guidelines laid out above, you are then free to:

Sell your design with purely Free content as a digital/printable file (PDF, JPG, PNG, etc.);
Sell your design with Pro content as a digital/printable file - only if the design itself is meant to be used as-is, and not meant to be further edited (ex. if your buyers will print it out as-is, without replacing elements or adjusting the layout);
Sell your design with Free or Pro content via Canva template link - if the design itself is meant to be personalized by the buyers (ex. they need to replace images or edit text).

Should you wish to use our pre-made template designs for commercial purposes, we highly advise that you create your template design from scratch. By simply doing this, you can avoid potential copyright claims and infringement.

However, we also strongly encourage you to check out the licensing terms of Etsy. If their licensing terms state that they require to sublicense your design, kindly note this is not permitted under Section 9 – Prohibited Uses. Sub-licensing designs with Canva content is not allowed.

*

Now I think the issue people run into when reading Canvas licensing terms is with the word "template". Canva does not want you to make templates with their stuff unless it sends the buyer back to Canva. So what's a template? If I'm understanding this email right, it's the part where your buyer might be editing your design for their own purposes. Like a business card template or something. The email says if your customer is meant to use the design as they receive it (like printing out wall art or writing in a journal or wearing a tshirt) then that's fine.
Again I sent them one of my designs and they said it's fine to sell.
I'm not sure about the part that says to check etsys licensing guidelines. Canva says you can't sell a license to their stuff. Sold products must be for personal use, not for someone to then sell again. I don't think etsy claims any sort of license to your stuff. I'll have to double check I guess.
So, are you guys understanding Canva's reply differently than me? Please let me know if you are, bc I'm about to open my shop and don't want to accidentally be doing something illegal.

Can we use pro elements and or templates on merch designs such as shirts and hats? And also stream templates for scene animations and what not?

This seems like a huge grey area and I have yet to hear back from Canva sadly. I appreciate the help and clarity!
