ОтветитьDude old world bodybuilding (the OG OGs) is fascinating. It is crazy to see the sport so far back in time and yet there they are already doing the poses we do over 100 years later.

ОтветитьEugene Sandow was perceived as a circus "freak". Some sort of accident of nature. Something no one alive had ever seen before. In late 1800's, women swooned to see him flex with his shirt off. (It bordered on the "in-decent".)
It was my understanding that wide public interest didn't occur until after WW-2. Men were wounded and spent weeks in casts or splints, to recover. During that inactivity, they lost strength and muscle mass. So, doctors suggested physical exercise to regain vigor.
A number of soldiers saw significant results and improvement. So, they did Not stop at mere "recovery". They went overboard, and kept exercising. Just to see what would happen. What "happened" was discovery that almost anyone could achieve remarkable development. Thus was re-born a wider public knowledge and interest.
I recall one Sunday in early 70's, watching on TV, "ABC Wide World of Sports". That episode showed an early contest. A real rarity on TV. The program's host back-pedaled, all but appologizing for airing something that might bore the viewers. The fledgling industry was trying to showcase and popularize itself.
Experts (the judges) explained that sheer size was Not the issue in winning. Anyone could gain that. They looked for Balanced development. Side-to-side, front-to-back, and top-to-bottom. In other words, massive pecs on skinny legs was Not good enough. Visual Balance was a winning sign of true skill and discipline in this new sport.
Excellent video! Very thorough analysis of the history of bodybuilding 💪

ОтветитьBodybuilding history is incredibly inspiring
ОтветитьSuperb video!
ОтветитьCorrection: In this film I state that there were 52 competitors at Sandow's Great Competition, and that was not the case. I made this vid a good few years ago and honestly can't remember where I got that number from. But having recently made an in-depth doc all about Sandow's Great Competition, I can safely say that there were 60 competitors and not 52!
