The question re: trust in a mass/global/decentralized civilization was expressed by Ben as "intractable", and I agree. The reason is that trust between two human beings has no need for any kind of technological overlay/facilitation in order for it to happen. Two people can simply agree to trust each other (the origin of the handshake…). As soon as we add a layer in between to "evolve" that trust to a larger scale, it is inevitable that we will NOT trust that layer, even though we can certainly imagine a perfectly trustable tech layer, it is only in our imaginations. In Spiral Dynamics integral, the model places the "trust" meme in Purple... our first tribal "we" system, and therefore the oldest and deepest human "us" memory... and Ben hit it on the nail when he mentioned the "pack" in terms of who he can trust... that is the Purple value system expressing itself in the 21st century. And currently we are expanding our "packs" to the videoconferencing world as well... some of my "closest" friends are ones I've never met in person. Yet because of my relatively long relationship with many of them, I feel like I do trust them... the question then becomes: "trust with what?" The range of that is from a "financial transaction" to "my life". Very different levels of trust.
