"Paranoid delusions"??? Not quite. And psychiatrists absolutely dislike their patients. I know. I spent 4 consecutive years detained under the mental health act from age 13 to 17 and I could write a whole series of books on the cruelty, hostility, gaslighting and verbal/emotional abuse psychiatrists regularly mete out to extremely distressed patients under their charge. Typical narrow minded approach to pathologise this man. When he says people dislike him, he would be correct. People DO dislike those of us who are different. I am autistic, Misdiagnosed Schizophrenic at 13. When others were abusive towards me, I was told I was "paranoid" too. I'm not. People have always disliked/disparaged me. It is painful seeing this mans predicament, it reminds me of my own psychiatric incarceration and the lifelong damage it has left me with. This man is indeed different, as am I. What I'd like to know is why every normal person finds that difference so unacceptable.

Psychomotor retardation was caused by anti psychotics.
Why dont you ever consider that the drugs caused this

"People dislike me as I am not completely like them".
This is a natural and expected feeling or observation from anyone/everyone.
This interview makes me feel so sad as his answers are ignored and not listened to at all.

See if I would of just happened to meet someone like this man I would simply assume that they are autistic to some degree. I wouldn't've ever think that they have catatonic schizophrenia. How is this different from autism? and have the two ever been mistaken for the other?

Any chance he's afraid because his parents locked him away for trying to play piano like raging dictators do and he's just highly intelligent? Any chance the guy is telling the truth and there's a scandal going on behind the scenes? Maybe his parents were foreign and he was raised under foreign beliefs and laws so they viewed him as strange for acting like a law abiding American, so they oppressed the ever living out of him. There's always a scandal going on behind every person deemed to be crazy. It's like a British human trafficking ring in america half the time.

So you say he is paranoid because he says his father doesn't like him - how do you know that he isn't telling the truth? Maybe his father DOESN'T like him?
Maybe he doesn't see and label signs of his mental illness because he erm, doesn't have one?
He comes across as a gay man, who is also Autistic.
Being stereotypical here - but the way gay men sit/hold their posture (as he refers to a few times). The way he has hyperfixations of things (such as piano) is very common amongst Autistic people.

It saddens me how he was treated. Obviously the treatments didn't work (hence why he died by suicide). Is it not possible this was because they weren't even treating the right "thing"?

I don't dislike the subject, yet I find his speech patterns and mannerisms unnerving.
No doubt he could pick up on that, were he and I to meet in person. I could see that as a "positive feedback loop" in how he perceives others perceive him

This is one of the more informational reactions I've watched on this particular video. There are a few more that I'd like to check out, but one thing I'm waiting to see is for a reactor to spend some time on the analysis from within the context of 1961, when this film was made. I'm an old-schooler, and the first thing that stood out for me when I saw the original video is that this young man displays rather effeminate speech mannerisms. In 1961, even the perception of having homosexual tendencies was grounds to be institutionalized, and I have wondered whether this is playing into the catatonia, as well as his treatment. It could explain an awful lot here. He's aware that his father dislikes him, as do a lot of other people. He's also said that he's telling the truth when he claims that no doctor has told him why he's hospitalized. Also, he has twice said that he is "working to do something in my life which most people do not do. This influences my thinking and occasionally my actions, and a psychiatrist has noticed this and dislikes my actions and the thinking, and has decided that I should be here to change them." Now, there is clearly no doubt that he's also displaying other symptoms of mental disorganization. But given the times, I wonder if being an effeminate male had anything to do with HOW he was treated. Watch the video again through that lens. More information can be gleaned from how this young man may have been conditioned to respond to these questions.

I know a couple of people I work with who have had ECT and swear by it, they have been severely depressed in the past and it has been the only thing that works. In fact i visited one, she wouldn’t speak or eat or even move when i visited her two weeks later she was up, dressed chatting and we went for a walk. She was discharged from hospital a month later and now works part time and has lots of plans - she says it saved her life and knows its available if she gets really ill again. She looks after herself and does lots of other things to stay well, I changed my view of ECT from this, to see somebody pretty much brought back to life was flabbergasing, i know it was abused as a treatment in the past but for some people it can be a lifechanging treatment.

Well, lots of lies from the start here, from my point of view. Four minutes in and I stopped. I've worked with these kind of patients for almost twenty years, but never have been one to lie and say such things (principally) like; "I've not seen this video beforehand" - and such. Probably a white lie for the public to help understand the assessment, but even still. Do it real. Thanks for trying, it made me wiser.

Why does he have to “admit” something is wrong with him? I think he’s just shy, managing trauma, and doesn’t want to be there. The questions may be basic, but his answers have clearly gotten him hospitalized in the past (terrible father) so he thinks about how to answer without making matters worse for himself. He’s effeminate and this wasn’t well received by society back in the 50s nor by his father, most likely. He just needs to find his tribe to be comfortable in the world.

at 13.01 he says that if he disagrees with his diagnosis he will be put in a worse hospital - to me, this is evidence he has been in this situation before and he knows that to disagree with anyone will only make his situation worse (and he would be right)but that means that you don't get truthful answers you are just being told what the patient thinks you want to hear.

This displays one of the problems with psychiatry. Experts view patients, and check boxes as if they're taking a test. We don't know what medications this guy is on. We don't know if he had been through ECT. We don't know what he his famiky and friends have to say. For wall we know, he was thrown in there for being gay, and in his mind has been punished for giving the wrong answers.

You as a psychiatrist may not feel comfortable saying so, but I have to say that my read on this is that this is a gay man in a world and time that is aggressive to him. It’s a disservice to speculate one’s sexuality without their consent, but I think this is a very plausible scenario. In that case, I don’t think what’s experiencing is purely paranoia, but likely aggression from people, and the desire to institutionalize/ change him. he’s saying that his posture (a bio mechanical gesture of the way someone carries and expresses themself) is different than other peoples. And more over, it angers his father- even therapists who would be employed to change him. Such conversion therapy is classified now as torturous and inhumane. It’s possible a lot of the behavior he’s showing is a response to not feeling supported, and intense trauma. I feel deeply for him.

What nonsense. This man was gay and behaved and moved like a typical gay person, which was a problem for society at that time. And nothing else. The reason he takes so long is to carefully consider which words he uses since everything was being recorded and could be used against him. Homosexuality was heavily punished back then. It's unbelievable that this supposed doctor who is analyzing him here doesn't notice that. There are absolutely no symptoms indicating catatonic schizophrenia. Rather, it shows that the father probably also had a problem with the feminine behavior and the feminine or homosexual way of speaking and moving.

I have never officially been observed in catatonia. I do have a diagnosis of MDD and GAD.

Sometimes when im feeling low and lethargic i sometimes am still. It is ascis moving takes too much energy. Im surecit is different. I'm more like to lie postate when i get that feeling. It is a combination of feeling unmotivated and feeling like my limbs are heavy. Sometimes laying still is also slightly comforting. Its a weird combination and i don't fully understand.
