Hello, I'm Joan and this book is called The Time of the Child by Niall Williams. Now I read an awful lot of books and I recommend a lot of books and all I really want to say about this one is that the writing is so exquisite that you should simply pick up a copy as quickly as you can and read it. Because in my view it is stunning. It's set in 1962. In the small town of Faha in Ireland, where apparently nothing ever happens. But one day a young boy finds a baby abandoned and takes it to the local doctor. Doctor Jack Troy has been the doctor in the town for many, many years and lives quietly with his 29 year old daughter Ronnie, who's never married And the baby comes into their house and changes their lives. The way that he writes about the countryside, the people involved, the baby, the decisions that they make and where this whole thing ends up are just. Superb, so I cannot recommend this book highly enough and me trying to talk about it would do it in injustice because the writing is some of the best I've ever read.
