That was actually pretty realistic fight even for today's standards. I saw so many awful fights in movies these days that can't even compare to this one.

Very impressive scene. He gives his life rather take another. Arguably the noblest character in the film.

Sad to hear Joanna Barnes past last year, the last living cast member and a beauty in her day. She was memorable in this cameo as a Roman patrician wife.

It was a good performance on Spartacus' part...I think he should have been allowed to live.

This is one of the best scenes. Also excellent was the period just before this fight, when they sit in silence waiting for their turn.

Just your typical game in the owner's/elitist box at any major sporting event

Why is his shield so small?

This film gets the history a little backwards. During gladitorial contests "thumbs down" was a signal that the defeated gladiator had fought well and should be spared, while "thumbs up" was okay, yeah kill him.

Man don't know what happened but started crying watching this scene - I guess they don't make them like they use to ( I rarely cry)

On weekends, Spartacus and his friend Wellhungus hung out at the Thrake Tavern trying to shake up some ladies.

Wonderful scene. Some tiny inaccuracies. Woody's gladiator type was a retiarius ("fisherman"). Lightly armed, they were typically smaller men. They would typically be matched against a murmillo ("fishman"), the most heavily armed and, generally, physically large.

Makes you wish that spearmen would have missed.

This scene kindles my compassion and conscience. Yielding to someone's thrill to kill the loser without justification is sadistic and brutal. Better to kill a dictator than an innocent.

Joanna Barnes, who played the brunette guest here, died a few days ago. She was the last living credited cast member of the film.
The protagonist, Kirk Douglas, lived until the astounding age of 103, dying in 2020.

Poor Lady Helena (Nina Foch) this was probably the first time a slave had refused an order from her. In her entire life. I bet she didn't water her litter slaves in the long journey home.

He did a good job at following his command. Thumbs down tells the gladiator to lower their weapon and let the opponent win, thumbs up gives them permission to kill. The movies always get that bit wrong

It can’t be just me who feels it’s a trifle unnecessary to see the bottom cheeks of that African combatant.

Chilling scene, when you choose death even though you've earned life. He didn't want to do that again.
