Not trying to downplay this AT ALL, it's scary af, but there's different video of a Derecho hitting, and I can't remember the state, but it's here on YT. A tree in the front yard was like the trash can in this video, lol, everyone was rooting for it (pun intended I guess 😂). The winds were WAYYY worse than this. Probably one of the scariest weather videos I've ever. If I find it (and then this video again), I'll post the link.

If you think a derecho is bad enough, it can form a HABOOB if the weather has been really dry beforehand! Just ask the people of Broken Hill, Australia about that!

Haboob: A ground-hugging, wedge-shaped dust storm. A dense enough haboob can literally turn midday into PITCH-BLACK!

You close to the ball fields? I was fortunate to live by them and their sirens are stupid loud. Was just me in the house and helped me get all my pets downstairs.

My family and I went through of these but we had no warning it just came in no sirens no weather alert we had to get in our car because of how windy it was and we where worried a tree might fall on our house, after the storm passed there was no power for a whole week because every neighborhood lost power so it took a while for the power company to get to us.

I always have told my kids... listen..LISTEN ..to the animals. I witnessed this one day as I knocked on a friend door. ALL OF A SUDDEN the birds in the nearby trees stopped chirping ànd grew still. Then they shook took off in to the air, quiet as a mouse. Suddenly 🎉the ground started shaking. A real live earthquake, iin the midwest area of indiana that usually doesn't have earthquakes. The birds, knew 30 sec befor the ground shook. Listen to you cats and dogs. They sense things .we can't hear or feel

Such a beautiful part of the country, wide open land, great people. But, living there does come with a cost. Hey, I’ll take the occasional tornado/derecho than the bs we deal with in the cities on the east coast😂

THAT was a derecho? Where’s this “chaos” you speak of? It rained & was a little windy. It didn’t knock down trees, it didn’t even move the garbage can. 🤷‍♀️ Maybe it’s bc I live in Tornado Alley, but this isn’t even considered a bad thunderstorm where I’m from.

You guys didn't have much warning, it seems. I live in Eastern Iowa near the Mississippi River, and we had a lot more warning that this was coming. We had time to put most of our outdoor stuff away. (including our garbage can) Our storm was a lot like yours. There were some old trees that got uprooted a few houses from us. I won't ever forget this day!

Don't mean to demean what South Dakota went through as I have seen many videos, but this particular video looked like our regular summer storms except we have dangerous lightning, thunder and hail. As I said not demeaning what you went through, as I have seen the devastation of other areas, but just sharing what our usual summer storms are like. Cheers from Queensland Australia.

This derecho was headed straight for us in Sioux Falls, but at the last minute, it took a right turn and headed a bit more south and spared us. We weren't as lucky on May 12, 2022, when we WERE hit by a derecho. I wonder how ours would have compared to this earlier one. The one that hit us in May hit 4 states, and it turned day into night. Three people were killed: two in South Dakota (including one in Sioux Falls) and one in Minnesota. Our wind hit a peak of 107 mph in S. Dakota. Some people called it a derecho...some called it a haboob, so I call it a derechaboob, ha!
