I realize that this video is three years old today, but I don't recall seeing it before today. For spinning reels, I use both Penn and Shimano. I use a variety of Penn Spinfisher reel sizes for fishing live bait and cut bait at the coast and for catfish on my home lake. Most of my Penn reels are at least 20 years old and at least one of them, a 650SS, might be approximately 30 years old. I love my Penn reels. I do my own reel maintenance and the Spinfishers are easy to work on, have many machined brass internal parts that will be going strong long after I'm gone as long as they stay lubed, and many of the parts are still available should I need them. Actually, I can only remember having to replace a few bearings and line rollers over the years. I use my Shimano reels, all of them Stradics, for casting artificials. Though I haven't owned any of them for more than five years, they haven't had any parts replaced and I have only taken them apart for re-lube sessions maybe once or twice for the older ones. They are light weight and smoother than the Spinfisher reels, though I must add that all of my Spinfishers are larger reels than my Stradics. I think that both brands make great reels and I'm glad that I don't have to choose one brand over the other. A final note.... I have weeded out other brands of reels from my collection because of parts availability. It is still relatively easy to find Penn and Shimano parts. Thanks for the video.

First of all my friend if your just dropping a shrimp off a pier a 3500 will do just fine. I fished here at seawolf Park in Galveston and caught a 43inch red with a 3500 Penn like you said it's an absolute work horse. A 6500 is more for big shark, cuda. Your over killing the way you fish Penns slammer 3500 would be better compared to your Saragosa 5500. That's how much better Penn is then that particular real you have. In a nut shell I've been watching your channel for over 2 years. You got to determine the proper real for fish at hand. That Saragosa 5500 will catch snook all day but so will the 3500 pen. But for the fishing you usually do a 2500 with an 7'6 inshore rod will fit your style perfectly. 💯 S Penn slammer has 30lbs drag which can easily pull in a 60lb fish.

They both are good reels. Penn might be better for boat fishing than Shimano reels used for shore fishing. Shimano reels are much lighter compared to the Penn products because they are built using different materials.

I bought a penn pursuit and had it less than 30 days.....on my 2nd trip to the beach i hooked up to something big and the gears totally stripped out.
I was so mad i didnt even return it to penn. I went and bought a shimano sahara and i love it.

forget Penn i went with a friend to fish in the surf for his first time and his girlfriend threw a cast out on the new Penn rod. The handle fell into the surf after that. Boy, was he upset. Know your making sense about the quality control of it. I wouldn't buy one. I have a Daiwa BG for my first rod, and I am enjoying it. I really would like to try a Shimano equivalent to get my own opinion myself. Any recommendations for redfish and trout rod eating size.

Bit underspooled on both those reels and the shimano could do with an adjustment on the spool spacers. Im also a Shimano fan, but fish Okuma as they are within my budget, the 6500 Penn is a big heavy reel, probably way to heavy and large in size for the typre of fishing you like, a 3000 penn or 4500 might have suited better, my 2 cents.

penn slammer 6500 is comparable to shimano saragosa 10000 if youre going to do an apples to apples comparison. you'll need a penn 4500 to compare to saragosa 6000 i own both, both are great reels but if youre going to do a comparison video at least be fair to the both brands.

I've bought Penn Spinfisher IV 2500 and a Shimano Stradic CI4+ 2500 at the same time. I fished them both equally off a jetski and gave them the same after use rinse. The shimano stradic had to go for repairs (under warrantee) then it died the following season and is now in a landfill somewhere. The Penn Spinfisher is still perfect and hasn't even had a service yet. I was so impressed with Penn Spinfisher that I went out and bought 3 different sizes of the next model up (Penn Slammer). I've been so impressed with them that I've now sold my Daiwa Saltist 4000 LTD and Shimano Saragosa to get a Penn Authority. I fish a lot here in New Zealand and I like Shimano, I have Talica 8ii and I've even just bought a Beastmaster 9000A electric, but when it comes to spinning reels, I now only fish Penn IPX rated reels.
I also had a Shimano Stella 2500 FE which cost me over $500 in servicing in 3 years!! WTF. Sold it! I'm told it was an older fresh water reel, but never again. I'd rather have a slammer than a stella

I don't think these two models can be compared. The Slammer 6500 is a really big reel and just like you said it is not for casting. I think the Slammer 4500 is more comparable to your Shimano reel. I have Slammer II size 360, Slammer III 4500 and Slammer IV 4500. My Slammer IV has the same problem as yours with an annoying sound just after 14 days of fishing... But I would recommend it because my previous models are ok.

Very nice summary! I owned both Penn and Shimano reels here in the south island of New Zealand, my experiences can be summarized as follow,, if you decide to have a smaller reel (3000 size ish) to go for sea fishing, both brands have amazing reels for such purpose, I have landed barracudas over 1 meter with both brands (Shimano: stradic 2500, Penn: clash 2500). If you are more of a surfcasting guy, I would always go for PENN, especially with the new Squall or Fathom star drag, or the Slammer you mentioned in the video, we have quite a bit of sharks and stingrays here in the southern part of New Zealand, Penn can handle them way better than Shimano! In terms of fresh water / river mouth fishing, Shimano has a huge advantage over Penn, as Penn here in New Zealand does not really involved with freshwater fishing at all. For baitcaster fans (the minorities here in New Zealand), I would actually go for Daiwa over both brands.

ive been a shimano guy for decades but recently i started trying penn and love them. i dont need expensive so i gravitate more towards the lower budget end. i have 2 zebco dock demon rods (which i love to use) and have a shimano sienna 4000 on 1 and a penn pursuit 4 400 on the other. i hate to say it but i like the penn more, so much so that i bought a penn pursuit 4 6000. they are super smooth with sealed ball bearings. i picked up the penn 4000 for $30 and the 6000 for $40 for $70 total.

I have Penn and Shimano reels and like them both. My Penn Wrath 4000 is still as good as the day I bought it, because of a little care. Smooth and powerful and the perfect weight for spinning all day.
My Shimano 4000 is also a reliable workhorse. I really like the smaller Shimano reels for LRF.

I bought a bunch of Penn reels used on eBay they are even heavier than the one you are showing and none of them have a reverse. I use them for carp and catfishing. Nothing I fish for will wreck those reels. I use Shimano for casting lures because it's lighter.

I use a huge Shimano baitcaster for musky so I have a heavy reel for that but once again not gonna wreck it.

Honestly if you like to spend a lot of money for surf fishing go ahead but the Penn pursuit any model is best for that and it’s cheap. Shimano for me. It’s best when you’re insured or out fishing for lingcod Cabazon so on. I have to agree when it comes to Penn I only like the pursuit. Next time try doing a comparison with the Daiwa BG I would love to see that.
