Quake - An LGR Retrospective

The level design in Episode 2 of Quake is some of my favorite in all of gaming, some of the underwater stuff is a bit annoying but it's really not that bad. The design of those levels is insane though, with moving bridges and platforms, buttons and arcane dark cathedrals and fortresses. This game is unbelievable. Episode 1 and 3 also have some pretty good level design but it's Episode 2 that is really just perfect. Episode 4 is mostly dog shit.

Wait, did I hear that right?: Quake was 20 years old in 2016?

Then how was I playing it in the 90’s?

I think two of the reasons it really took off are (1) Not just TCP/IP support, but support for more than 4 players. Where Doom blew us away supporting 4 players, Quake came in with 16 and just opened a whole new world of fun. (2) It came with "Quake-C" support, basically saying "Mod it up folks!". This really spoke to that modding community and also opened up a new world of fun.

The only thing that bugs me about glQuake is the brown bars on the side of the HUD.

The lowpoly enemies look like they would have jumped out of Alone In The Dark. They didn't age well.

The way that the difficulty and episodes were selected in this game is still unique, with it being its own hub level instead of a menu.

The new Dooms feel, in a way, to soft and colourful in comparism to this dark realm. As a kid, I found this world magical.

At 10 years old, this was my favourite game, until Malice came out. Malice doesn't have the coverage is deserved!

This and unreal tournament were the first shooters I played as a kid.

I feel so nostalgic now that I'm on my 50s... this was hands down my best game experience ever! Running it on a PC that I put together with a 486 AMD CPU later upgrading to Pentium 90, 3dfx Voodoo video card to later upgrade to Nvidia, 33.6k modem then to a 56k ( thanks to the good old Pricewatch, Tom's Hardware and Anand's Tech). The multiplayer was so addictive that on my work days after going to bed I would hear the grenades bouncing in my mind and had to get up and play some more ugh.. This game definitely was an influence on my divorce, so kids; don't get married too young and get all the fun out of your system before tying the knot!

Played this game through for the first time this week. Holy shit, I never realized how much I was missing. Fantastic game.

I still remember the computer store a couple blocks from my middle school in late-96. Had a 233MHz Pentium MMX, at least 32MB of EDO memory, S3 Virge DX for 2D, and a Diamond Monster 3D 4MB for 3D running GLQuake. Holy shit, my mind was BLOWN.

It was literally that autumn, I had realized the PC was THE most powerful gaming platform out there.

Recently played through all 3 main campaigns in the span of 2 months. Tbh they were underwhelming. Nothing special. Quake 4 was surprisingly the best one to me. But maybe because the doom 3 engine just feels Soo good. Quake 1 and 2 had a lot of issues. My main issue being the super shotgun not being “super” shit stank

I notice Quake 4 missing from that shelf. I mean, it wasn't that bad. Dull? Yes.

Also I've never gotten the Quake music to play, some problem with my nameless soundcard or my CD drive's painfully low read speed; I'd chalk it up to age, but it didn't work in 1999 either. I've always missed out on that soundtrack until the remaster.

I remember going to K-mart in 1997 with $15 in my pocket just to wonder around. Back in those days Kmart was exciting. Same year my parents got us a Packard Bell D135 Multimedia with a 133mhz Pentium. Anyways, at K-mart, I found Quake on some shelf at $9.99, didn't know anything at all about it but I was like, ok, looks fun. Mind you all I "played" before was Journeyman Project Turbo, Silent Steel demo and Spiderman cartoon maker. After I got home and installed it - I.was.floored. wow. I spent so much time on it. And then I realized, this was just shareware! AND I COULD UNLOCK THE WHOLE GAME WITH A CODE! lol Needless to say, I bugged my parents but they wouldn't budge.

Quake hasn't been Quake since Quake.

I had the shareware of it and oh fuuuuuck did it scare me as a kid. I'd baby out and cheat with godmode but was still beyond scared and on the edge of my seat lol.

The sounds of shooting and killing the dogs struck me when I was a kid.

I'm here to watch this after playing the recent remaster. Love to see things before other things happened lol. For real tho, this one map in Scourge has me pissed!
