The Lockheed D-21 was an unmanned Mach 3 reconnaissance drone designed and built by Lockheed Corporation in the 1960s. It was primarily developed for the United States government as a spy plane to gather intelligence over hostile areas.
The D-21 was launched from a modified version of the A-12 reconnaissance aircraft, known as the M-21, which was a derivative of the CIA's famous SR-71 Blackbird. The D-21 drone was designed to be air-launched at an altitude of around 80,000 feet and a speed of Mach 3 from the back of the M-21.
Once launched, the D-21 would fly a pre-programmed route over the target area and take high-resolution photographs, which were transmitted back to the control station. After completing its mission, the drone would deploy a parachute and be recovered by a specially-equipped aircraft.
The D-21 drone had a wingspan of 19.8 feet, was 43.7 feet long, and weighed 11,000 pounds. It was powered by a single Marquardt RJ43-MA-11 ramjet engine and could reach a top speed of Mach 3.3 at an altitude of 95,000 feet. The drone had a range of around 3,000 miles and could fly for up to three and a half hours.
The D-21 program was highly classified, and only a small number of missions were flown during its operational life, primarily over China. The program was eventually canceled in 1971 due to cost overruns and technical difficulties. Today, several D-21 drones and M-21 aircraft are on display at museums around the world.
