Dickinson County is rich in natural resources making it Iowa’s #1 vacation destination, as well as a much-desired place to live, work and play.

We’ve witnesses an influx of visitors to the Iowa Great Lakes region in the last several years. As Iowa’s premier vacation destination, fun & nature-loving people want to be here. We have something for everyone: beautiful lakes, boating, kayaking, fishing, restaurants and nightlife, an outstanding art center and summer theater, bike paths, camping, year-round activities and the natural beauty of our lakes area. To accommodate this growth, we desperately need a development game plan.

On April 18th the Dickinson County Planning and Zoning Commission, lead by administrator David Kohlhasse, met to discuss a proposed campground development, which included RV and Mobile Home Parks regulations. Currently there are no regulations in place for campground development.

The Iowa Great Lakes Association [IGLA] believes that, in light of the growing number of visitors to this area, we must have regulations to insure growth and development that makes sense. Further, we believe that while county officials support development, they are trying to define what is appropriate without the guidance and input of professionals. The County currently has no Master Land Use Plan to guide where development should be located and no professional environmental and infrastructure studies to determine the effect development will have on the environment and the Iowa Great Lakes Watershed. In addition, County Supervisors are trying to manage this without a Chief Financial Officer, County Manager or full time staff to insure developer compliance with conditional uses.

Members of IGLA believe that the county has the financial resources to take a more thoughtful, strategic and proactive position on land development.

We urge the County Supervisors to hire a CFO who can allocate funding and identify financing options for a thoughtful and intentional approach to land development. Further, hire a County Manager to advise them on best options, and bring in a Master Land Planner who can assess our area, and give expert guidance on where and how profitable development can and should take place.

We want development that makes sense for the community, and like you, IGLA wants what’s best for our beloved Iowa Great Lakes, now and in the future. We fully support thoughtful, intentional development that will generate solid cash flow for our community all while protecting our natural resources for generations to come.

If you agree, please let your voice be heard. Write or email David Kohalhasse, Zoning and Environmental Health Administer, 1802 Hill Ste. 2101 Spirit Lake, Ia. 51360 or email at: [email protected]

Please urge him to bring in the support needed to insure land development that makes sense for our community.
