Sometimes you get more than what you pay for! I wonder if you could crimp or bend the lips that hold the glass slightly to give it a little more grab...then you'd be set.

Get a new fluffy hand towel n wrap that glass for storage n tossing about the truck

It's probably not of much consequence but how much air do you think was contributing from around the glass & it's frame?

I’m wondering if the damper worked better cause of the wood rack. You said the expensive stove didn’t have one and the damper was more finicky.
