How does pixel density factor into your conclusions?

Just tested the 2x extender on my r6 mk2.

Shot the moon of course to see the difference in results.

It's so bad! The picture quality is so much worse than without.

Wouldn't recommend to anyone

Sorry, but within 90 seconds you're already teaching incorrect information. A crop sensor doesn't make a 1000mm lens a 1600mm lens.

Crop mode is when the lens is an EF -s 3rd party and you’d get massive vignetting without crop mode

Nice summary except the fact, that comparison of pretty new Canon R5/R6 with old grandpa Canon 40D from 2007 doesn't really make much sense, that's huge difference in technology.

Hi Duade! This is probably one of the best photography videos I've ever seen. The practical examples make it so much easier to understand. Thanks for putting this together! I have a question: I have an R5 and a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II and have been thinking about getting a 1.4x teleconverter but been trying to understand if it makes sense or if I'm better off just cropping. Based on my understanding of this video, is it accurate to say that although I might lose a bit of sharpness in some cases, the teleconverter will give me a narrower depth of field and a nicer bokeh compared to just cropping? Thanks!

You compared a 10-year-old APSC sensor with the current R5 in terms of ISO. That doesn't quite fit. An R7, Sony A 6700 or Fuji XH2S are also good to use with higher ISO. Ok, the mentioned cameras were not yet available at the time of the video, but even the XT4 or A 6400 are still good to use at higher ISO. Otherwise, as always, a top video that I watch from time to time

Thank you so much for your review! It's really useful and covers so many different aspects that it's hard to convey how grateful I am to you! The fact is that I purchased a canon 300mm 2.8 ii and a 2x extender. I have a canon 7d ii and am a little disappointed with the quality of the resulting picture (when the bird is in the distance). Apparently, I need to purchase a full frame and close the aperture more on my 7d ❤❤❤

With a 200 to 500 and a 2X converter I still end up having to crop a bit. I don’t crop that much since I only have 12 Megas pixels to start with on my Nikon D3S. I’m planning on getting the D850

Clearly, this video is long range outdoor shooting. If I can sum up my experience with this type of photography, a nmirrorless APSc is a budget friendly start for shooting outdoors with substantial light. If you have no lens, get a zoom lens to start. Like a 60-600mm f4.5. Lastly, consider Gigapixel AI.

I've begun my journey as a wildlife photographer with the Fuji X-H2S and a 150-600mm. It's kinda interesting because there's not many photographers around so far that uses the X-series as their platform, so the knowledge is quite low overall. I made the choice myself because I had heard about the great ISO performance and the image quality and so far it hasn't disappointed. Some of my best shots have been 6,500 ISO or higher and I've had no issues removing some of the noise with post processing software (especially not with the latest Lightroom upodate). I've really liked Fujifilm cameras in the past so this is why I decided to go with a Fuji for wildlife photography as well. It is a bit tricky in low light situations of course but if Fuji stays on this path I'm sure we will have more options in the near future when it comes to better lenses etc.

Fantastic and super informative video Duade! I've just bought a Fujifilm X-T4 with the Fuji 70-300mm and it's turning out to be an awesome and very portable combo for sports/action/wildlife.

Fuji's 1.4 teleconverter is meant to work really well with the 70-300 regarding maintaining image quality. I'm a hybrid shooter and the only thing keeping me from getting the teleconverter is concern for the autofocus when doing semi-pro surf videography. Although I guess manual focus is an option.

Thanks for your video mate and do you have any thoughts?

Thanks for the video! I bought an R5 earlier this year. Emptied my camera budget account, so I have been using my EF 70-200 2.8is with and without my 2x converter for several months. I get decent pictures with the lens by itself, but when I add the converter the pictures are just not great.

I finally have the budget to buy a new lens and was trying to decide if I should go with the RF 100-500 or a used original EF Prime 300 2.8is. I ordered a used 300 2.8 today. I will have 21 days to try it...if I hate it, I will return it and get the RF 100-500. Can't wait to see if the 300 with the 2x converter on the R5 provides good files. Though this video makes me wish I had one with an R6ii and the RF 100-500. Those files from the R6 look really good.

My Sony a7rv has a 9k sensor. Using my 600mm lens, I can crop into 1500mm-ish (2.5x crop) and still retain a 4k crop. I have no need for a teleconverter. I use DxO deep prime 6 pro software and the sharpening capabilities of it are astonishing. I don't pay as much attention to ISO anymore because this software is absolutely amazing. It also adds dynamic range.

Hi Duade,

Thank you for the informative videos. This is the 2nd video of yours I have seen. I appreciate the direction you offer on the well thought out information. I live in Montana and am in the market to purchase a camera. Just not too sure what would fit me best here with all the wildlife. I enjoy hiking, camping, and capturing all the beautiful moments I experience with sunrises in nature enjoying all the elements that come with it. I love taking quality photos of animals, birds, the mountain side and landscapes. Your videos are extremely helpful but I am limited on a budget. Is the Canon EOS R10 Mirrorless Camera with RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM any good? if I decide to also purchase the additional RF 100-400mm f/5.6-I IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon RF Mount? I want something I can pack out with me in the wilderness on multiday expeditions and wanted to see if this is something worth investing into to capture special moments during my adventures. Like it to also be lightweight enough to travel with. Any help or advice from your professional view is greatly appreciated. Hope your life is well, God Bless.

An apples to apples comparison is an extender vs cropping on the same camera. I find modern extenders beat cropping if the light is good and the aperture reached isn't diffraction limited. Adding an extender and the aperture is less than 10, you're good. Maybe get away with f/11 on a full frame. Beyond that, it's not worth it.

Great video mate! Very thorough! I just got my R7 and currently playing with an EF to RF adaptor on a 100-400 EF f4.5-5.6 IS USM first gen lens. I took 650+ shots of raptors in flight and a lot of it was out of focus. It is likely dude to user (my technique). I'm struggling with whether or not to use back button AF or continue with focus recompose. R7 has a wide focusing area and my hope was it would be able to keep everything in focus, but as stated above, about 90-95% are out of focus. AI was in servo mode. f5.6, sutter at between 1250 &1600 and iso around 400-800. Not sure if you have any suggestions or if you've played with this combo?
