The European Union is becoming more and more like the Soviet Union. But if it does happen, it will be even more disappointing. The goal is to colonize smaller countries. This is already looming large. If this were not the goal, then cooperative, free trade would be enough. On the other hand, even today, the powerful western member states dictate what the smaller eastern member states are allowed to think.

With the European Union, the countries of the former Soviet sphere fell from bucket to bucket. You can't talk about freedom and equality at all. The union goes so far as to overthrow democratically elected parties and leaders in some member states. For example, in Hungary they have been trying to do this for 12 years. This country is mercilessly blackmailed, rightfully due money is refused to be paid out with all kinds of false reasons.

We say a definite No to the European empire. The European peoples had and still have a very bad experience with empires. We want a strong European Union of strong, sovereign nation-states, but not an inhuman empire.

Canada is more of a confederate under your definition. Fiscal policy and internal security are largely controlled by the provinces, because the federal government always follow the provincial leader’s will in these areas. The only policies made centrally are the monetary policy, foreign policy, and the military.

I don't think that's plausible or desireable.
Problem with such system is that you would have to get people to agree to suffer for good of EU. To make a lot of concessions. And while for countries with similar development and environment it might not be a problem - EU member states are very diverse. Some countries would see massive additional burden that they currently don't have, like migration from africa & middle east. If it was federation model - EU could simply settle them let's say... in Poland, with no right of local people to prevent it in any way. Knowing how Poland is - it would end up in massive public outcry and potentially - requiring EU army to suppress it. That kinda ends up as slippery slope to considering such government as occupation authority instead of common homeland. And it's not the only such issue. These would multiply. And eventually EU would not be like United States but closer to Soviet Union, aka prison of nations.

It would be wonderful.
I'm from Balkans, and if there will be a federal institution to crack on the national corruption it will be a wet dream for all of the Balkan Population. Literally, every European commissioned project, being a bridge, a highway, a farm, a shop, whatever, is approved only and only if some local ex communist mobster that is now a mayor or a senator gets something out of it, otherwise is rejected.

In the US, the taxes are even more localized depending where you are. Besides federal and state taxes, some states also have a county income tax and other states have a city income tax. Some states don't have a state income tax at all but make up for that with higher fees, for example, driver's license and license plate renewals.

It will never happen, for a few simple reasons. Countries, culture, economic models, and traditions are totally different. If Germany, Austria and Switzeland are totally different culturally, how do you want to merge Slavic countries, Baltic, and Mediterranean?

Did anyone even ask EU citizen if they want to be a part of a superstate? Yes, and it was firmly rejected. Now, this centralisation begins without peoples' consent. Policies now in play, accepted by the EU Parliament are those of a centralised government, not a federal one. This means, that a franco-german duo will easily outvote other members in anything they want. This, long term will be a disaster. Proof is in the pudding. German and French appeasement policies towards russia have led to invasion of Ukraine. Germany has never cared about safety of eastern EU members, Nord Stream pipelines are a prime example. Did they learn from these mistakes? No! We are being pushed into more of the same.
EU was founded as a trade block and it should stay this way. Why would we want to be puppets in the hands of the FR-DE duo trying to play world powers again?

Europe is not like the United States. There is a more nationalistic view of countries here. There isn't such things as Europeans. More like Romanians, Bulgarians, Hungarians or Belgians(tho I'm doubting Belgians seem very nationalistic)

I like the idea of multi-tier model very much! I don't believe in a "one size fits all" EU. We have on one side the federalists, who wants to drag everyone into a federation, and on the other hand us who preferred the four freedoms and the security dimension. The union is gonna rip apart in the middle if this continues, we will se more _exits.

how about a eu rferendum, penal laws and labor code? without those 3, the other 3 are irrelevant.

start by holding a referendum and let the people have their say about the so called United States of Europe. ask the polish if they want to go and fight in a french war? or a Portuguese one, or a spanish one... and so forth...

no referendum, no US of Europe. just that simple.

28 MEP on a transnational list has been decided in the European Parliament, against the desires of a large part of it, and it will, thankfully, never come to be. Dead in the water at the Council. Any smaller country with two bits of brain will veto it because obviously the 28 will still go defend the national interests and will end up coming from the bigger countries. Also, unless you want 28 MEPs who are football players or the like, I don’t know where you’ll find someone that can be recognised Europe wide to be voted in.
It’s a dumb a f idea

I think a European union with the old duchies instead of the current countries as states whould lead to the best outcome.
more power on the second-smallest scale, no power on the artificial construct scale, and more power to the collective scale.
Not sure if there is data on governing a federation with this many states.

I think a centralized organization is not better, it is not faster, does not make better decisions (actually dictatorships would not be possible in Confederation such as Switzerland !)

Centralized Europe is a trap.

Biggest obstacle I see for getting further integration actually ACCEPTED by the populace, and thus future-proof, is the language. As long as people don't start speaking the same language, the cultural differences can be very effectively emphasized by populists.
I believe this is the root of the problem why Belgium still can't function properly as a state.
The US didn't really have this problem.
