I’m amazed this movie stuck to its guns and didn’t cop out with a “they get back together” ending. That’s what makes it special to me

I'm not sure if the writers wrote the character that way, but despite saying all that, he still comes across as somewhat off. Like a psychopath pretending to change as opposed a genuine effort to change.

As a 40year old, I see this so differently now. When I was 20 something, I thought why can't they just figure it out? Dial back in and be better/stronger together..

Yes, he took her for granted.. yes, he figured it out too late. But the general premise of this movie is largely told from a woman's point of view. There's frankly more to the story.

She could have been more up front, and discussed what she wanted from him prior to it becoming unfixable. Then all the games and trickery that ensues after the break up where the woman is hoping the man steps up and figures it out, eventually becoming what she always wanted in her partner all along..

Men can't read women's minds.. and women struggle to be direct with what they want, and will often mentally check out before physically ending it.

It would be great to redo this movie, and add in the effects of social media, dating apps and the now unlimited optionality presented to modern women. Tell the story from the man's perspective as he watches his woman succumb to the endless amounts of attention garnered through the internet and several generations of weak and Godless men.

As soon as she was bringing home other guys, that would have hit somewhere in me and I would have left. She's not yours, it was just your turn. If it didn't work out, you can work on it. Once she's bringing home other guys, she doesn't want to work on it. Leave, remove all attachment to her and move on. Put that pain to good use at work or the gym etc.

Modern relationships. It's all about how you "feel" at any random time, no big picture, no effort is given to fix things, just jump elsewhere at the first bump

I went through the exact same thing. Same dynamic. Years and years begging for him to see me and to show the bare minimum consistency and affection. Guess what? After I finally left, he blamed me for leaving and was too proud to try to get me back. You can never win with these people. They'll never learn. Leave and don't look back.

Been there. It’s heartbreaking to have to LEAVE the man for him to take the relationship seriously. My ex knew how unhappy I was for years. When I finally ended it, he all of a sudden put in a ton of effort to win me back. It was too late.

Men. Show respect to yourself. If she can replace you within second now, if you guys come back together again, she will do it again. Leave her, forget her, move on.

Ive lived this scene. it’s the curse of men and women. Both wanting to maintain their pride and show strength. No one wants to be the vulnerable one.

People looking for the perfect partner are destined to live alone. Maybe it is for the best...but that is a fact. If this was real life and these characters are truly in 2006, the year this movie came out - then today in 2023 - they would still be single - just 17 years older. Just keep that in mind when you decide how important it is for someone to want to want to do the dishes.

It shouldn't take the person leaving you, to do the bare minimum. He for sure would have fell into his bad habits had she stayed.

I don't find the way the movie ended sad because I don't believe these two belonged together to begin with. I think the force of Gary's personality convinced Brooke to be with him rather than her being so in love with him. She belonged with the kind of guy who asked her out at the gallery. With the break up they could now find the kind of people they should be with.

The way she said, “I don’t feel the same way” was sheer perfection. I just love this scene and I love that she stood up for herself here.

The augment started over not wanting to do dishes then it got escalated over other problems that he was unaware of The flowers ,the ballet etc So we as men are just suppose to be mind readers when women don’t tell us things,um no it’s your fault women speak up if your not happy now don,t wait until you blow up It’s just a movie but it’s real life too I know this really happens to a lot of people .

No wonder why Indians are the highest earning people in the US, with lowest divorce rate and investing a great amount of time and money in educating their kids. Women leave when they finally accept the fact that the person they have tried so hard to fix, is never going to come around. Women go to extreme lengths to stay in a relationship. But once a woman is done, she is done. Women do not lack options. They may lack self-confidence and self validation, which is why they stick with even the worst kind until all their motherly instinct dries up. So when a woman gives up one you, you're never getting another chance. Why? Because she's already given you enough chances.

When we have not given our lives to God, when we do not base our lives on what would make Jesus Christ happy, this kind of pain results. Life and relationships will have pain... but without the satisfaction of purpose and meaning. If God is directing and we are listening and obeying, it's a different story. Our spirits are the focus, not selfish desires that lead to feelings of emptiness. We never know this until we turn our hearts to Him. It's true. A life lived for God is beyond imagination in rewards.
