Thank you. I navigate life with challenging depression and anxiety that began in my freshman and sophomore years at Stanford. It was very debilitating particularly during the first few years. I took time off, focused on my career, and have made progress in different areas of my life. Fast forward 10+ years, I decided to return to school last year. I appreciate the insights you shared on how to pursue the deep life while managing depression.

Wow, if everything was so simple, there be no people who needs to reinvent life.
It is slow job that implements something new for months, and then when you do not need to waste your mental energy on it, to can go to the next one.
It is a motivational work that is based on your true wishes, personal experience why it is important. Experimenting on things.
The last mediocre of importance situation from that I was figuring out in my head took like a month + 3 month of coming to that situation and insight. Like what are you talking about in 4 month 😂

The video, "How To Reinvent Your Life In 4 Months (My Full Step-By-Step Process)" by Cal Newport, focuses on a structured approach to personal reinvention within a four-month timeframe. Newport introduces the Deep Life Stack framework, dividing the process into layers Discipline, Values, and Control.

1. *Discipline Layer*
- *Set Up Core* Establish a central system to track commitments, habits, and systems for the reinvention process. This could be a physical or digital location.
- *Identify Keystone Habits* Choose three significant daily habits—one focusing on professional life, one on health and fitness, and another on personal growth or fulfillment.

2. *Values Layer*
- *Reconnect with Moral Intuition* Revisit influential readings or experiences that resonate with your core values and define a well-lived life.
- *Draft Your Code* Create a personal code outlining what you stand for, how you navigate both good and challenging times, and how you live a fulfilling life.
- *Establish Rituals* Develop regular rituals that reinforce and reconnect you with your values, such as meditation, nature walks, or volunteering.

3. *Control Layer*
- *Multi-Scale Planning for Work* Implement a planning system that spans quarterly, weekly, and daily schedules to gain control over professional commitments.
- *Household Planning* Organize non-work-related tasks and responsibilities to ensure they're captured, reviewed, and managed effectively alongside work commitments.

Newport emphasizes specific timelines and focuses on gradual progress within each layer, aiming to complete the entire reinvention process within four months, leading to a more structured, intentional, and fulfilling lifestyle.

And then you get another video that says: It only takes 6 months to change your life!

And then you get another video that says: it only takes 4 months to change your life!

And then you watch another video in which another talking head says: Instantly change your life with these 6 habits!

And then another one in which they assure you: This is the ONE thing you have to do to change your life instantly!

What a fucking shit show.

People: do the work. You know what you ought to be doing and you aren't, stop fooling yourselves and giving these idiots your money and time.

Nov 2021 - Stopped drinking alcohol (2020 - like a lot of people, I began drinking too much)
June-Sept 2022 - Added new skill and completed Career change (included a 57% pay increase)
Dec 2023 - Reinventing myself (still working on what this looks like, but this video was helpful)

Despite reading a great deal on philosophy and religion when i was young. I have never had a book have a moral impact for me. P.S. Man's search for meaning is the second most depressing book i ever read. What i took from it was that mankind will do anything to survive even at the cost of his fellow man.

Hello guys,
So, I am a bit confused about the difference between rituals and my routine.
For example:
1. I have a morning “ritual” , when I wake up to open my journal and review the attack plan of my day, calendar tasks etc. – Is this a ritual ?
2. Then I will answer 2 questions from my questions list. – Is this a ritual ?
3. And I will read my “code”- Values”.
After I drink my coffee I jump on a walk depending on the weather to get some morning light for 30-40m and get back home and start working on whatever is my task for the day or deep work session.
(on other days I exercise outdoors so I replace this with the walk)
Evening:
1. Closing “Ritual” – What I did during the day, checking my diary and journaling.
2. Tasks offload for next day - review.
3. Talk to my parents 20-30 minutes.
4. Walk
5. Pc off then reading before bed – Is this a ritual ?
Which of the following are rituals and which of the following should be classed as routine.
For example if I perform it “religiously” (say prayer) my walk are like that. Watching the sunset etc.
Rituals should be mainly not so costly cognitively. Should they be only reminders ( things that I look on my wall haha)
So Routines will be my exercises, deep work sessions ( the current thing input into those sessions) My choirs my life obligations ??

Hi Cal,
I love your books and appreciate the interviews you do. This is the first time i've seen your video presentation. The content is incredible, the part that feels like it lets the rest of it down are the live drawings / slides. You have an assistant so at least a two person team. I'd like to suggest software called Ecamm Live and Elgato Stream deck (ios app or hardware controller). Alternatively the rodecaster pro 1 or 2 or similar cue control. It's painful to watch you write slides that the video box of you is covering up. Perhaps use these tools to step the game up with pre-made info graphs.
