Located in the county of North Yorkshire, and around 9 miles east, and slightly north, of Middlesbrough, is the town of Redcar.

The name 'Redcar' means “(place by the) red marsh” from the Old English read 'red' and Old Scandinavian 'kjarr'. The settlement originated as a fishing hamlet in the 14th century.

Much like many British seaside towns, Redcar was transformed into a resort the Victorian era. In 1846 an extension of the Stockton and Darlington Railway brought a train route into the town, and with it, holidaymakers seeking to 'take the waters', i.e. explore the health benefits of sea bathing.

In the 1870s Redcar Racecourse opened. Around the same time, Redcar Pier was constructed, opening in 1873. During the Second World War, a large section of the pier was dismantled to safeguard against it being used as a landing point by German forces. After the war the pier was left to decline, and was eventually closed in 1980.

Aside from tourism, steelworks was a major industry in Redcar, particularly in the post-war era. Teesside Steelworks at Warrenby, just west of Redcar town centre, was the town's main employer. This would eventually close in 2015 due to the site owner entering liquidation.

King Edward VII was a regular visitor to Redcar, so in 1913, three years after his death, a memorial clock tower dedicated to Edward was placed on High Street East where it stands to this day.

Comedian Larry Grayson first coined his catchphrase "shut that door" at the New Pavilion Theatre Redcar (now the Regent Cinema) when a side door had been left open causing a cold breeze to blow across the stage straight from the sea. The building features in the video around the 11-and-a-half minute mark, albeit hidden behind construction work.

In 2011 construction began on Redcar Beacon. This has been dubbed as Redcar's vertical pier, offering 360 degree views of the seafront.
