Prof. Avi Shlaim falsely claims that Israel is committing "genocide". He knows very well that this is not true: Israel is fighting a murderous organization, Hamas, which is more than happy to sacrifice its own citizens as human shields. The Gazan civilian casualties are not intentional by Israel - they are the fault of Hamas. One of the differences between Hamas and Israel is that Israel is using its army to protect its own civilians, whereas Hamas is using its own civilians to protect itself. Prof. Avi Shlaim shows a distinct lack of intellectual honesty.

However, I do not yet agree that the construct of settlements means that there can no longer be a two state solution. My feeling is that Israel was taking a gamble by permitting the construction of new settlements contrary to international law so there must be consequences such as Israel being required to return all or parts of that land and those properties to Palestinian control or to negotiate a trade for alternative land within Israel.
