Predicting shoulder season weather in Southwest Utah is challenging! For the second time in 2022, our original travel plans (this time, to the four corners region) are put on hold due to weather. So we opt for a day trip to Gold Butte National Monument. Located about 80 miles north of Las Vegas off Interstate 15, this vast monument serves up incredible rock formations, awe-inspiring petroglyphs, an abandoned mining town and dams built by the CCC. Camping is available in many spots along the ROUGH dirt roads and dry washes that criss-cross the area. We set out to complete an 80-odd mile lollipop drive that would hit all the major features. However, it quickly becomes clear that a multi-day itinerary is a must to truly explore the area. We end up completing about half of our planned drive. We'll be back, and next time we'll plan on camping and giving this area the attention it deserves!
