The need of which was made all the more evident after Askia Muhammed had been designated Caliph of Takur in 1496 by either the Caloph of Cairo or the Sharif of Mecca (sources differ on this point).

The evidence was in the fact that Columbus and all of the sailors on his first two voyages described the some of the people they saw as West Africans.
