Because so many people overpaid for homes even while loan rates were low, I believe there will be a housing catastrophe because these people are in debt. If housing costs continue to drop and, for whatever reason, they can no longer afford the property and it goes into foreclosure, they have no equity since, even if they try to sell, they will not make any money. I believe that many individuals will experience this, especially given the impending mass layoffs and rapidly rising living expenses.

The downfall of California began with Rodney King. Then, the election of Gray Davis. I find it sad that San Diego has gone the way of San Francisco, L.A. and other cities in that state.

“Un-housed individuals”. Let’s use the correct labels: drug users, drug sellers, alcoholics, vagrants, crazies. When the language sanitizes and covers up what’s going on, you can’t solve it.

A CYCLE is being forming where businesses leave downtown and more crime makes itself present...

We need to handle homlessness in a humane and thoughtful way because they are still part of our community. But they need to meet us in the middle." Our city council members need to pass a 0 tolerance day camping ordence that prohibits lage collections of trash furniture and make shift housing, homeless should be allowed to camp only after dark in our city parks, butvnot allowed to have fires of any kind. Public drug use is against the law and should be treated as so!" If the homless wish to remain in our city they should fallow the law like everyone else. I dont think thats to much to ask. I think its time to pass a city ordinance that makes boosting and pety theft punishable by public flogging it will stop all thefts dead in its tracks. Its impossible to have a safeproductive civilized society without law and order and we cant afford to load our courts up with petty crime...

Are municipal, state and federal governments going to actually take concrete action to improve housing stocks and deal with drug and alcohol addiction? Will they enforce bylaws that govern sidewalks and parks that do not permit camping and parking beyong three hours?

Part of the problem are these property owners AND tenants themselves: there used to affordable housing downtown, still not enough but it was there, they were called SROs. In the last five to ten years, maybe even less, i have seen almost every one of them get turned into overpriced condos and boutique hotels. The former low income tenants of them ended up on the streets. You can't complain about a problem YOU are creating!

Hate to say it, but I hope there's a mass exodus from downtown. The only thing politicians really understand, and respond to, is a financial loss. It will always be about money.

People forget homelessness is big business consuming tax dollars to "resolve a problem". But they won't resolve it because that is there job. This is why politicians declare "wars on" things like homelessness. The term war on is another way of funneling money from the system. Most people just aren't aware of how so called wars on things actually work.

Sounds like the movie Robocop. Are people going to wait for AI to enter the scene before they acknowledge what's really going on. It should not be that hard to enforce vagrant laws if they wanted to remedy the problem. Or dedicate land to the homeless so they have an area to go to that they could easily be directed to

The gentrification that has taken place for the past couple decades in every city always confused me. I never understood why they build soooo many luxury $2500 condos in the middle of the worst inner city ghettos. For I’ve been wondering why people with that much money would live in the middle of the ghetto. Protected by luxury walls. Now they complain that ghetto stuff is right outside your door.......... yeah you should of thought about that before moving 2 blocks away from skid row. I lived in SD for two years. Any where near that dome library has been littered with transients and vagabonds. I find very interesting that people are shocked at what they see in those areas. Duhhh

Fun fact: You can only CHOOSE homelessness if theres handouts present. Otherwise its like choosing to starve. To all those out there who have fallen into homelessness and want out, i feel for you. May they find the home they seek. The rest are generally bums and drug addicts.
