ok so hear me out. Its not time travel. As we know when you hollow you start to forget who you are, so what if youre not entering the giants memories but reliving youre own memories?

no he does not recognize you. He simply hates humans for what theyve done to him we are simply reliving the memory of the one who defeated him

the dlc implies that vendrick's blessing, the thing that allows us to resist the effects of the hollowing curse, was what vendrick stole from the giants, inciting the war that brought them across the sea to drangleic. i like to think that this power is the reason the last giant attacks us on sight. the giant lord's rage against the bearer endured even after he spent so much time withering away in a cave. no matter how much pain the giants endure, they never lose sight of themselves, preserving their identities, their souls and their ambitions throughout all eternity. it's possible that the holes in their faces have something to do with this--they are born physically hollow, literally missing a portion of themselves, which in turn makes them immune to the hollowing curse.

If there's one thing you don't want to be in the Dark Souls universe it's a king.
I mean if you exist in the Dark Souls universe you're pretty much universally going to get bent over and fucked, but kings specifically seem to get it extra rough.
Gwyn was, technically, the king of the gods, dude got to be the first guy to put his soul on the existential BBQ.
Every king in DS2 got a fragment of Manus to dick him over except the Old Iron King who got a lava demon and the Old Ivory King who got the one nice fragment of Manus but then got to the point where he had to drop his ass into literally burning chaos.
DS3 had a royal line where the heir was born specifically to put his soul in the existential slow cooker known as the first flame.
Seriously in Dark Souls, you want to be a fire keeper, sure your eyeballs get pulled out but at least after that you get to chill by a campfire while someone else dies 3738 times.

So, from what I understand, you don't see a vision of change the past. The soul from the Last Giant/Giant Lord states that he was subdued by an unknown warrior and put into his confinement where we fine him early on.

We are the unknown warrior, same with sir Alloin( however tf you spell it). The time travel is canon to the DS2 timeline, and character at the beginning of the game is remembered by the Giant Lord as the person who condemned them to their imprisonment.

The fact that in the present you find the corpse of Dremmond with his armor minus the helmet because he gifted it to you in the memory is proof that what you did is an actual time travel.
Bernhardt, however, is a total mindfuck and incongruence like many other DS2 sadly offers. If it wasn't for the fact that he recognizes us in the memory we could theorize that he actually fought as a mercenary in the war against the Giants, his strong motivation allowed him to resist the Curse through the years to the present days and maybe because of time, maybe because of the Curse he eventually forgot about us and doesn't recall us when we first meet near Majula. BUT he recalls us, he greets us even in the past and so we have to guess that he, too, managed to reach the Ancient Dragon and took another mist heart? Could there be two or more? He travelled in the memory with us? I really cannot tell

I don't think parallel timelines are necessary. Maybe I'm just crazy here, but especially given the context of Dark Souls 3 I think it would be kinda weird to assume that giants aren't subject to the cyclical hell of undeath. The Last Giant is just the hollowed remnant of the Giant Lord.

The Scholar update answers that question, the Ashen Mist Heart is actual time travel. In the real world, we, and no one else, hunt down crowns of the 3 would-be Monarchs. As we are the only ones to collect the crowns, we can't be re-living the memory of someone else talking to Vendrick about it when we enter the Memory of the King in the Undead Crypt.

As with Artorias and Manus, I think there is something notable in that both times you went to the past, the only creature in the present that may recognize you are silent enemies. Both Sif and the Last Giant "recognize you", but without time shenanigans there is still a reasoning for them noting you (Sif taking her weapon one more time to defend her master's grave; the Last Giant because he most certainly didn't see anyone in years, and you're from the species that did that to him)...
To me, there is an understanding that time flows, that even though you may agitate the waters upstream, if you wait long enough things will balance (That is, the player visiting the past or not, Manus WILL be stopped and the credit given to Artorias' sacrifice, and the Giant Lord being stopped in is revenge and taken by Vendrik's forces)

We lost so much potential with what they had made before they decided to scrap everything and repurpose all of the assets for a completely different story halfway through development.
I wish we could have gotten a game that kept to the original vision of DS2.

At the end of an age reality itself breaks down. Like when you take the elevator Bove the clouds and end up at a lake of lava. There isn't literally a lake of lava above the clouds, reality is just so fucked up from the dying of the flame and the horrific abuse that the curse has cause.

How to live happily in the Dark Souls universe:

1. Do not, under any circumstance, be a king, ruler, or any rank of royalty.

2. Pray to Miyazaki no other king or god decides to not like you and mess up your life

So ppl thinking its time travel or something heres the problem with that: Rarely have we time traveled in soulsborne (Not including sekiros memories that is cheating), and the times we have its been because of amother presence outside of the darksign. now there is a line from Ds1 that applies to Ds2 and Ds3 as well that: In lordran the flow of time is fractured. which means when the darksign started spreading (ds2 calls it the curse) the flow of time in Londors Three kingdoms became fractured as well
