So funny how they react. Im glad I live in California where there are so many different cultures. I know a bit of different Asian languages because of coworkers or friends. It’s so cool to also have Asian food from different countries and eat it like it’s part of my culture.

You could ONLY do this in Europe or America. I have spoken to 100s of people in Southeast Asia in Mandarin or Japanese. They will NEVER, I mean, NEVER admit to not understanding you. They just play dumb, it's their culture everywhere here: Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, etc. ALL 100% will NEVER admit they don't understand and just stare at you. Why do I keep doing it? Well, in part, if I'm in a Japanese restaurant I don't see why they have the arrogance to assume they can force me to speak English instead of Indonesian or Japanese, so I just talk back to them in Japanese the whole time unrelentingly. If they would simply admit "I don't speak Japanese" I would immediately try another language, but since they refuse to acknowledge I have no more reason to stop as they will not stop English even if I really do not understand. Fair is fair. (Honestly it kind of sickens me I don't know how to cope.) But meanwhile, it was interesting on 3 occasions in Cambodia. Once a girl in a burger shop really did speak at a solid beginner level. One taxi driver started responding to me "OK BOSS" in Mandarin. And finally at a meat shop on the Cambodian-Viet border, the boss of the place was Chinese so all his Cambodian employees spoke really fluent beginner Mandarin.

A couple years ago, I was flying on Delta from Atlanta to Tokyo, sitting next to a Japanese woman. The caucasian male flight attendant me asked what I wanted for dinner and I told him. He then turned to the Japanese woman and asked her, in Japanese, what she wanted. She beamed and they carried on a conversation for a while. I asked her if his Japanese was good and she said it was perfect and that he was a native speaker as he was born in Japan to a US military officer/Japanese mother and lived there until he went to the US for college.

the first time i went to China I was waiting for my luggage and a Chinese girl came up to me and said she didn't speak any Chinese and couldn't work out where to get luggage from so she asked a foreigner. i didn't speak Chinese either but i was able to work out where she had to go. It was quite amusing.

This is the reality of immigration and the evolvement of language. The first immigrants may only speak their native tongue, the second generation are bilingual, the following generation may have lost their native tongue in favour of the language of their adopted home. In Britain, due to the density of the Indian/Pakistani population in the Midlands, those peoples struggle with English. Even second, third generations use the language of their ancestors and don't speak English particularly well. And are not particularly well integrated. They support the country of their parent's birth in sport. It's a strange phenomenon. I think when you have emigrated into another culture you should do so wholeheartedly...leave the culture of your parents behind, and immerse yourself in the culture of your new home. That shows respect to your new home.

If she doesn't speak Vietnamese, it's not a result of her, it's a result of her parents who didn't teach it when she was young.
