The out of date bit about photo ID is somewhat funny, but as someone that has seen “100-year valid drivers licenses” I can attest that trying to ID someone that took their photo when they were in their mothers womb back in 1982 is really me just going “fair, I have to assume you looked like a potato 30 years ago.” and let them in. At that point, why bother lol

But Fish and Cushion aren't really an alternative.

My favourite one, was going to collect my airport pass so I could I work at in the terminal and they insisted I had a photo ID to collect it, despite the thing having my picture on it

Had something similar happen to me last week. My driving license was about to expire, so I went to order a new one. It went well, took a photo, signed my name, paid the fee, the license card will be made and sent to the nearest post office. Then, they remind me that in order to pick up my license once it's arrived, I need to present some form of identification to the post office.
VALID identification.
Like the license I'm there to pick up, but can't actually get without valid identification.
Okay, that's an issue, I thought, my driver's license is the only identification I actually have, and it will be expired by the time the new one arrives. I used to have a passport but that one's expired too. Maybe I can get a new one?
So I look up what you need to have in order to get a new passport:
- You need to be an adult. Check.
- You need to be a legal citizen. Check.
- You need valid identification.
... shit.
And as far as I could find, the only accepted alternative is to have a close relative of some description accompany you, in person, and corroborate your claim. Meaning if I wasn't able to go ask for a new passport in time, my only alternative would be to call my dad and have him take the 2.5 hour trip to where I live on a weekday, just to have him say "yep, that is indeed my son", and then drive home again.
Thankfully I did manage to order a new passport before my license expired, but still...

Expired ID bugs me too. How many 6'3" beardy men are going to rock up to the counter claiming to be me? Ok, sure that card is a bit out of date, but do you think that there's a line of anachronistic vikings lining up to pretend to be a cranky old civil servant?

That expired ID concept bugs me too. Surely a form of ID that is permanent is far more credible and secure than one which is being regularly replaced and re-issued.
