I wish you could run through the big cities in the north (Algiers, Constantine) on your way to Tunisia.

I know it might make you feel restricted if you found the police escort you, but in the past we have big problems with tourists who ignore the safety measures and when they got lost the government put all it's efforts to find them and sometimes it's late because our Sahara is very big , so now if any tourist want to visit the Sahara he can choose his own local guide or the government offer it's own escort, and i think this is the best solution in order to enjoy the adventure and they don't get lost.
