And it has Gene Simmons' wig
ОтветитьI’m so surprised that this film isn’t better known. I first saw it at age 12 and I thought that the silent era of films was the most interesting of all.
ОтветитьGolem are real. Man Is made of clay.. and energy.
ОтветитьMan creates the monster, admires it, and then despises it. Profoundly obvious and effectively subtle , all at once.
ОтветитьIsn't The Hunchback of Notre Dame horror's first franchise?
Esmeralda (1905) short film
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1911) silent film
The Darling of Paris (1917) silent film
Lowe....at least now I know where the character Reverend Lowe from Silver Bullet came from
ОтветитьThe whole second reel of the 1914/15 DER GOLEM in which the Golem comes to life can be seen in this excellent power point program done by the director of Munich's film museum. There's also fascinating information and rare documents concerning all three of Wegener's Golem films. Henry Nicolella Conferencia I Der Golem (1915), un trabajo colaborativo de archivos
ОтветитьWHEN will the new discovered scenes of 1915’s “The Golem” become available finally?
ОтветитьIron Man is a modern retelling of the Golem.
ОтветитьThat's interesting. I had heard of The Golem, although not seen the surviving footage. But I didn't realize there was a series of them.
ОтветитьHey, isn't that the girl from Lazy Town? Or is it Dora the Explorer? 🤔
ОтветитьA movie I want to see, but can't find somehow...
ОтветитьFantastic and informative video on the origins, and making of possibly the one creature from horror that hasn’t been remade or re-adapted. Having said that I was wondering if you ever heard about how a reimagining of The Golem was announced by Cannon Films in the mid to late 80s, with Charles Bronson, as an NYPD detective who has to battle The Golem.
ОтветитьI went to the 1999 Jewish Film Festival in San Franciso to see the original Karl Bose silent movie production from 1917. It was featured at the Castro Theater, which really cool old place, it slanted downward into an Orchestra Pit which a band I think called Davka, played the John Zorn like dramatic Cello and bass, wild sounds! It was phenomenal, and had to laugh at the off set clunky oldtime EXPLOSION EFFECTS a bit kooky and delayed wich made it funny! Bigtime stuff over a hundred years ago! Hilarious! And touching, I read the book and play, and many rare religious literature on the subject and magic even far earlier accounts of attempts of golem creations by holy Rabbi mystics of the days. Goes way back.
ОтветитьYou always do a great job! Thank you
ОтветитьAnybody knows "Bunraku" from 2010? Very "german expressionist like" movie, but with Josh Hartnett & Ron Perlman, more "japanese expessionist", idk. Very underestimated IMO
ОтветитьA concise but thoughtful, thorough treatment of this wonderful, stylish horror film. Thank you.
ОтветитьAnother great mini-documentary. I've long intended to see this film but never have. This is a reminder to correct that.
ОтветитьVery cool!
ОтветитьEver the Gollum segment in The Simpsons' Tree House of Horror?
ОтветитьI believe the claims that the full movie of Der Golem 1915 being discovered is largely rumours and speculation, as no sources or evidence of its full-ness has been made. Only source of the claim was by Donald Glut who says the full film is in the hands of a European collector. Who this collector is, where he is and if he still has it is unknown.
ОтветитьMan whered you get the shirt from??
ОтветитьYou have to review Metropolis.
ОтветитьWhy does he keep mis-pronouncing her name? It's SalmonoVa, not Salmonica.
Ответитьanother great vid mate!
ОтветитьA reel of German film discovered in Argentina...I wonder how that got there!
ОтветитьThank you for touching on the subject as anti-Semitism! I absolutely hate how common it became in pop culture to just ignore these aspects and historical context in general. The creator potentially being a Soviet collaborater and hiring Jewish actors, even working with resistance groups does not acquitt him of possible anti-Semitic imaging. There was a lot of anti-Semitism in the USSR, not all resistance groups were progressive or even liberal at all, Jewish actors were used by Nazi propaganda until relatively late in the regime's life span (as straw men to deny any allegations against the them).
ОтветитьEl golem de Praga. Hasta en los simpsoms sale.
ОтветитьWhat mind-blowing images of The Golem - those sets - brilliant designs by Hans and Marlene Poelzig, that have a distinct reflection of the quirky architecture of old Czech buildings - the art design, the Golem makeup, special effects, lighting, script, cinematography and overall direction. All decades ahead of its time, and like Metropolis, stands firm today in its effectiveness.
Informative and well presented commentary.
"The award came with, a statue of Jōseph Goerbles (spelling?), which was placed in the downstairs, bathroom". Right where IT, belongs. In the 'crapper'😏!!! Very good documentary, sir👍☺️!!! I have a large Golem, action figure, in my bedroom, as I comment.
ОтветитьHe's the Bob Dylan of his time
Ответить"...A life-sized bust of Josef Goebbels, which Wegener apparently kept in his downstairs toilet."
I'm sure that Mr. Bailes meant that Wegener kept the damned thing somewhere in the room, but I like to think of it being kept in the actual toilet itself.
The 1920´s were a really dynamic and interesting decade, one foot still in the 19th Century and the other in the AvantGarde 20th
ОтветитьKeeping it simple: I enjoyed the video and I have never seen this film before. Wonderful...!!
ОтветитьThe presentation is excellent, but I don't think it would have been a big deal to find yourself somebody to advise you on how to pronounce the surnames. To just pronounce them the English way is not a good idea...
ОтветитьLooks like Batista sometimes
ОтветитьI guarantee Hitler hated this movie
ОтветитьAfter watching the film, I saw many similarities to The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Both Quasimodo and the Golem are the product of a cleric. They both begin to find their desire to live their own life. The cleric tries to maintain control resulting in disaster. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is another golem style story. Horror and sci-fi can illuminate humanity in so many ways.
ОтветитьI’d love to see a remake of the Golem maybe from Universal and maybe Directed by Stephen Sommers
ОтветитьWow. I’m impressed by your knowledge of movie history. I’m 57 and there are many who are unaware of The Golem, let alone the talent of Wegener. ❤️
ОтветитьI haven’t seen either of these in years but is the 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers an example of a remake disguised as a sequel of the 1956 version?
ОтветитьMany thanks for another fine job, Robin. Hope that other reel of the film becomes available soon.
ОтветитьYet another fantastic retrospective! This is superb
ОтветитьNow watching further, the "How he came into the world" sets and interiors are startlingly similar to Antini Gaudi's style. Any cross pollination known?
ОтветитьAbsolutely fantastic video, thanks!!!
ОтветитьI applaud the makeup and special effects. Impressive for the 1920s. I’m now curious of other older effects heavy films. It would be fun for the corridor crew to review these, too!
