From what I understand, male chicks are destroyed after they are hatched because only female chicks are used by the meat industry for human consumption and for eggs.

It's really touching how this rooster responds to affection with his own displays of affection.

You are a great person. I raised a lot of chickens my self as pets, they are great guys allways.

Our dog Baxter came across a number of chicks abandoned at the city park who had been dumped there by someone who got them for their kids at Easter and realized that they were a handful. Only one was still alive. We took him (it turns out) home and he was the funniest little creature, never more than three feet away, sitting on sour shoulders when cooking, and more interested in the beagle than he was in him. Thenk goodness, we found him a home on a farm in Delaware, where dozens of hens and another rooster live as pets, for eggs, and not meat. he turned out to be a Barred Plymouth Rock, the heirloom chicken of America until about the 1920s. He's acclimated and happy, and I can't wait to go visit. I'll never look at another chicken again the same way.
