Love how you emphasize that early design/modeling is showing the "big picture" items for early cost estimation and coordination with other trades - many designers jump right into modeling every piece down to the "silly millimeter" level - understanding the different stages of design is huge in our MEP industry. And love your statement "So much of early design is just getting something on the documents so we have something to argue about" - well said, my friend! I've often used a similar phrase "something to throw darts at" - better than reviewing a blank drawing!
