The others drank after they weren't selected to be first man in space, but who can definitively say Yuri would not have done the same. They all likely were qualified and worthy.

It was really a seat of the pants kind of thing with the Russians at the time. The program was quite small overall compare to the effort the US was doing at the time and in public. The Russians did a lot with what they had and they took more risk too. That would bite them but well they did get into space, only they and the Americans could do that at the time. I didn't know about the drinking problems they had within the program.

So the reason Gagarin was chosen is because he wasn't a drunk.. lol

Gagarin also had drinking problem after his historic flight. He was touring the world and participated in many celebrations which involved drinking a lot. Some even say his drinking may have caused the fatal incident that cost him his life.

He was a real gigachad.

Great Video Comrade! On a Sidenote: My Grandma used to work as a Waitress and one Day had the Honour to serve to Siegmund Jähn, the first german Cosmonaut from the GDR. According to her he was an absolute down-to-earth Guy nd very well-mannered. And he didn´t liked all the fancy Food the Party Officials ordered for him. He would have prefered a Schnitzel or Gulasch and a Beer.

Of first batch of cosmonauts at least Titov and Leonov became cosmonauts as well. Kind of mixed blessing to be first as that will be only spaceflight they do. John Glenn was made an exception, but there was immensely long gap between his spaceflights.

Even on topics like this one that are less likely to garner a huge number of viewers, this man's videos are well-executed and enjoyable to watch.

When I started reading about the Space Race one of the things that made me fall in love with the Soviet Space Program was the Intercosmos Program. It seemed that anyone, regardless of his Nationality could go to Space, that for someone from Mexico was really inspiring
