Despite the inaccurate portrayal of Lt. Dyke here, I would say he made a critical mistake to hold up, order the 1st platoon to attack by itself and provide suppressive fire. It's not gonna help. Only removing what's preventing your advance. That's what Lt. Speirs do, then resume the initial advance by doing a house to house attack.

Winters was exactly like that. Someone who truly cared about his men, the mission but also knew to think ahead. He also knew who to rely on for leadership. Speirs was that man.

Low key think it’s cool how Spiers doesn’t even blink and just starts tac sprinting towards Easy 😭…literally not a fraction of a second between the order given and the order followed.

I read Winters’ book. In what really transpired, Col. Sink asked Winters: “What are you going to do Winters?”

Winters replied: “I’m going!” But then after a few steps he realized it’s not his job to lead a company. He already leads a battalion. And for some reason Speirs was just near him when this was going on. Speirs was just the right person for the job. So, he sent Speirs to take command of the attack and relieve Dike.

Some stepped up despite their fear, some because of it. They didn’t want to be seen as cowards.

Seems like fate had it that Speirs was the first officer Winters saw. The perfect officer to command the attack. If I remember at the D-day episode, Winters was tactically attacking the trenches of the artillery gun and then when Speirs arrived, he just went straight out of the trenches and started attacking.

Parallel to this episode, the operation requires attacking under heavy fire. then coincidentally, the attack specialist LT is nearby.

I’ll go to my grave saying spiers should’ve got the Medal of Honor for this
