In our household we would tune a ukulele by singing "my dog has fleas" works every time. Keep up the great work!

I am a former Combat Developer for the US Army’s USASOC. My rule of three was inviolate. It MUST INCREASE Lethality and Survivability and Must decrease (or preferably eliminate) Fratricide. If you didn’t address all three, your chances are reduced compared to another item that did.

The Bauchan example, I believe you missed another aspect, that of the fact that unless they were opposite Canadians, the Germans knew that they COULD surrender and survive.

Re bombing the viaduct. Pilots wouldn't fly along the line of it, instead they would fly at an angle (30°iirc). Thais was because if you fly along the line of the viaduct and drop bombs any cross wind would blow all muntions off target. Flying at an angle to it increases the chance of a hit

Artillery support is best used when u are aming in "that" direction, thats about how accurate it is and that is the point of the whole thing.

In modern war the 'one shell every 3 minutes' tactic would probably not work. One of the reasons for short, intense barrages is the counterbattery fire. And if you were to shoot one shell every 3 minutes your firing position would be identified and destroyed quickly

This would be great to be updated after Ukraine war. Or NOW. I'm surprised Mr. Brit did not mention British secret POW camp Trent Hall of WW2 fame. Great story.

I retired from law enforcement in NC, and there is a documented case from the outer banks, ironically near Kitty Hawk. A little Cessna plane had engine trouble and had to crash land on the beach. A Park Officer saw it happen and sped off to assist. As the officer neared the plane, the pilot exited from the cockpit. The officer was close enough to basically be at the tip of the wing. As luck would have it, the pilot was hauling a plane full of drugs. The pilot grabbed his pistol and the officer did the same. The two guys emptied their mags at each other and each had a hi-cap 9mm. They ran out of ammo and stood there staring at each other-- neither one had been nicked. The pilot ran and was caught a few hours later.
Shooting is different when you have hot lead sizzling the air around your ears.

I was in law enforcement, and did mostly firearms instruction. We always had a bunch of gung-ho guys wanting to kick in doors while wearing ski masks and were always trying to out macho each other. (Yes, in the US) They thought they were supermen when all we had were orange plastic training guns (In rookie school)
I found what would give them a dose of reality. Have them to attack some of us who were barricaded in a house (training structure)-- and both sides had paintball guns and had to wear t-shirts. (Only safety glasses allowed )All of a sudden the big mouths didn't think they were bullet proof anymore-tactics changed- other plans were proposed--- and all because they could possibly get some welts and bruises.

Maybe not in colonial actions like the UK and US like to do, but in the current conflict it’s definitely turning the enemy into minced meat.

Even today calling in (dumb) artillery on a point target as a forward observer is extremely difficult. We usually had a little dance when we'd put steel on steel because it's pretty tricky to hit a tank with guns from miles away.

There are methods to deal with tanks or other smaller or mobile targets with artillery but generally it's not the best tool for the job. Artillery is best used for taking out emplaced high value targets like airfields or radars.

The question is if you could apply the lesson learned in the barrage in that Italian town to evacuate a part of the Gaza strip. A steady rythm of loud and quiet, perhaps with longer spaces to evacuate. But still, ideally you could get the vast majority of the people there to leave, before any major ground offensive. Not ideal, but perhaps useful for minimizing casualties.

OK, 6000 shells against eight 88's. Were they still firing? The OBJECT of the exercise with indirect fire weapons is NOT to destroy the target but to suppress it. And it's not like it's anything new. It had been known for years that destroying a target requires many more rounds that suppressing it. That's the reason the default in the NATO default Call for Fire is Suppression. If you with to destroy the target, the word "Destruction" must be inserted.

"a. Type of Adjustment. In an adjustment, two types of fire may be used--area or precision.

(1) If no specific type of adjustment is designated, area fire will be used. (Split a 100-meter bracket.)

(2) When precision fire is desired, the observer announces, "Registration" or "Destruction," depending on the reason for firing. (Split a 50-meter bracket.)" - US Army FM 23-91 Chapter 5

As someone who lives in Israel, every few months there are escalations in Gaza resulting in Hamas (together with other insurgencies, notably the Islamic jihad) fire thousands of rockets and mortar fire. Many people I know and myself get used to it after going through thousands of drills and real sirens, (also we have a defence system) are used to it, so I suspect that veteran soldiers might be able to get used to it. Although as a civilian it is different.
still i think bombardment should be mainly used inside a fire and manoeuvre type of tactic
