I was taught in class long ago that a kingdom is a nation-state governing a nation, and an empire governs several kingdoms, and, therefore, nations.

I always liked that simple and direct definition. One nation? Kingdom and a king. Several nations? Empire, with an emperor ruling over kingdoms.

In fact, the definition of an empire is very strange. Many so-called empires do not claim to be empires when they exist, and even their leaders are not labeled as "emperors", but they are classified into the broad category of empires.

Empire - A nation which inserts its own political structures into other nations.

To be an empire is not to be powerful, to be an empire is to externalize political structures. The concept can be extended to every facet of civilization, the core element is externalization without regard for what’s already present. Missionary work is the work of a spiritual empire. Police actions are a form of political & ideological empire. Cultural or economic export is soft imperialism when directed by the state (such as Samsung or Boeing). Imperialism is the opposite of self determination. A truly self-determining nation would be totally apolitical about the structures of other nations, they would be isolationist while also being homogenous demographically (aka, the state would made up of a singular nation of people). In practice, all nations are imperialist to an extent in that all nations make clear moves to insert their political structures into others.

This was very interesting, I honestly never thought there was deeper political meaning to leaders visiting their forebears, but now the pattern is both obvious, and fascinating.

It was a good video but actually Alexander didn't invented the imperialism and concept of emperor. It was Cyrus the great that you mentioned him in your video. Cyrus was one of the first men in history who conquered different kingdom and add them to his kingdom and formed a large kingdom. Instead of visiting the tomb of older emperors and conquerers he worship thair god and in every land that he would conquered he would visit thair temples and worship thair gods. And he worship all the gods that where in his empire. And he called himself savior too. By saving slave jews. And he respected the people that he conquered as we can read in Cyrus Cylinder. And as you say they become the people that they conquered as Persians become the Babylonians. He was the first emperor or as his successors call themselves king of kings.

An Empire needs a few ingredients. 1. It needs to have a significant portion land relative to its neighbors. 2. It must have the military might to project its Forces beyond its border to the point conquering the region is a real threat. 3. It needs to have 2 or more distinct cultures within the Empire. 4. it must have the diplomatic means to enforce its designs on its neighbors. 5. It must have the techonological capability to match or surpass its rivals and neighbors.
As long as three of the five are true, Its an empire.

An empire is when a nation or confederation of nations controls other nations. "An extensive group of states or countries under a single supreme authority" is the first definition on google. Unify Italy? Nation/confederation of nations. Take over Eritrea? Empire. Countries claim to be descendants of the roman empire because the roman empire is important to biblical prophecy.
