I tried to use dd to image an iso to a usb stick on a mac the other day. It flat out refused. When it was mounted dd couldn't touch it, then when I unmounted dd couldn't even see it. Had to do it on my steamdeck instead.

Why would they intentionally gimp their OS like that?

Linux is almost ALWAYS Faster than any native OS because it is not major bloat.

There's nothing to be afraid of as soon as your data folders are backed up to the external storage. If you run your M-mac to unbootable state it's always possible to DFU-restore it via USB cable like an iPhone or iPad.

For the same price as the Mac mini you can get beelink or minis PC and it's x86 64 bit plus you can upgrade the drives and ram and wifi etc.

to be fair Asahi is the reason I may even consider a Mac in the first place. After getting my first ever Apple device, an M2 512 iPad pro with keyboard and pen, I could see that Apple is good for 2 and only 2 categories of people: 1. people with a VERY, VERY specific need, and 2. people with no need at all and just want an Apple. If you got 1 task and Apple can do it, it is fine. As soon as you try to branch out and step in to general use, everything crashes and burns, and that place apple products the smallest amount possible above being completly useless... aka, "it doesn't really do anything but it does "X" thing very well"

One reason why asahi is faster is maybe because it uses an application-based programs, instead of macos which uses document-based programs. the latter consumes more power, but is the reason for the interface being uniform throughout.

faster does not mean better way to many of you kids think the faster it is the better it is and thats where you all need to go see a doctor to get your heads on straight, out put quaiity is what matters most and thats where apple is unmatched by anyone else.. apple will eventaully be faster as well then anything out there right now apple beats out the speed of most other pcs and thats fine that there are a small amout for now that are slighty faster but they sure are not better and can in no way compete with apple when it comes to on screeen and output quaility and everyone knows it wether they want to admit it or not everyone knows its true ...

Rosetta2 can be run in Linux VMs on top of macOS to run x86 software in ARMlinux-VMs.
The same thing may be possible with dual boot, with some hacks. (Not sure)

One of the main performance tests for Linux (kernel) developers has always been... compiling the Linux kernel! It's one of the reasons Linux is so fast for general desktop use and compiling especially. Compiling something like Linux involves starting a lot of new processes, opening lots of small files, doing I/O on small files, etc. Linux's memory management, process scheduling and filesystem is highly optimised for this. So it's not really a fair comparison, in some ways. But it's still very cool.

I tred this on my m1 Mac mini last night and there seemed to be no output to my monitor, mouse or keyboard when Asahi was supposed to do it’s final boot. I am using a monitor cable with USBc on the computer side and HDMI on the monitor side. Also using a USBC hub to connect my USBA mouse and keyboard. Will retry tonight with just a normal HDMI cable and mouse/keyboard plugged directly into the USB A ports on the back on the computer.

They are doing some stuff that will affect the software industry if they can get precedence set. Could revoke a lot of licences

M1 Macs becoming 2nd seat to M2 tech, is there a source to by M1 Macs like yours at a better lower price? (Refurbished). I still can’t afford an Apple priced system.

Also Apple laptop with Pentium, is there a good refurbished market for any of those? I would like to load on external drive a Linux OS.

I want to keep MACOS to backup old iPads.. lol

GOD BLESS! HOPE YOU ARE FELLING MUCH BETTER! ALTON

That's nice, except Linux GUIs suck and have always sucked. Not as bad as Windows, sure, but still they suck. I've run Linux systems since the multiple floppy install days and all the GUIs suck compared to what Apple puts out. So why would you replace a better GUI with one that sucks?
