Indonesia has grown larger and more powerful since the end of the cold war, quietly becoming the biggest Economy in Southeast Asia and the fourth most populous country in the world. They have a massive military of 400,000 personnel as of 2023, the same year that they approved a 20% increase to their defense spending. Physically connecting the Indian and Pacific Ocean is the nation of Indonesia where 60% of the worlds maritime trade passes through this region. Indonesia is a major part of the 10 member Association of SouthEast Asian Nations or (AH-see-ahn) ASEAN. When combined as a whole, they rank as the fifth-largest economy with a combined population of 662 million people and a GDP of 10 trillion or 6.5% of the global GDP. They’re kind of a big deal. For context NATO has about 900 million people under their security umbrella.

So now it’s becoming more clear why both the United States and China are investing Billions of dollars competing for Indonesia's affection trying to win them over as an ally and a bestie. But We’ll see how Indonesia’s foreign policy of aggressive neutrality might be one of the biggest factors preventing war between the US and China right now. The non aligned policy of a country halfway around the world from you might prevent armageddon. How does Indonesia’s unique history explain this stance? What are the reasons Indonesia is suspicious of any potential U.S or Chinese alliance? And why are they paradoxically speeding up their military’s modernization efforts?

But remember Indonesia is one of the founder of Non-Aligned Movement which doesnot and will one align to anyone. For consideration, if Indonesia join US, US will likely to interfere with Indonesia's politic, etc, except for Indonesian growth. Which if join China, China will likely solely for economic developement, so which one do you think is more wise to choose?

I am Northern European, flag of Denmark was shown instead of Dutch flag. So could you please update that part.

If you study Indonesian history, you will know that Indonesia hates China because Chinese was part of the people that oppressed it during the 350 years of Netherland occupation. Indonesia as Muslim country also hates the US because of the US support for Israel. Indonesia was also a "neutral bloc" during the cold war.

So, it won't chose friends, it's a big country for itself.

Indonesia is a non-aligned country but not 100% because until 1967 President Soekarno was close friends with the Soviet Union and China, after 1967 President Soeharto was very close to the USA in Southeast Asia, President Ford gave support to Indonesia for the occupation of Timor Leste to prevent communism in Southeast Asia , after the end of the cold war USA supported Australia's interests in Timor Leste by banning the sale of military equipment to Indonesia and since then the Indonesian people no longer trust America until President Obama gave a grant of 25 units of F16 jet fighters, currently the Indonesian military is very close to France, Britain and the USA bought more than 25 billion dollars in military equipment but traded more closely with China, India, Asean, Korea and Japan

Indonesians don't hate American people. We hate American government's unfair decision to let Israel keep destroying Palestine without penalties. Indonesian people now stopped buying American goods and products as a sign of protest against Israel.... We will buy it again if America can stop Israel and work to rebuild Palestine. Create solution so Palestinian people can also live in peace and freedom. Not under occupation of Israel.

One thing with Indonesia is that the influence of western media is still prevalent in the media.
However with the rise of middle class disposable income and infrastructures, China has boosted Indonesian economy over the past decades.

Indonesia also won't align with U.S. foreign policy on Palestine issue, that makes closer to China.
Indonesia also have traditional family values, which LGBTQ is frowned upon by the majority.
SCS wise, although there are some border disputes, i think China dispute with Indonesian side is less hostile compared to the Philippines.

To summarize, the US influence in Indonesia is through foreign investments and media,
While the need of Indonesians are economy growth, infrastructures and partnerships - which China offers more on the table.

What a shame near 1mil people have watched this. This dude throws out Indonesian proverbs with incorrect meanings, uses wrong flags, claims histories are still debating cuz he read a paper that's half a century old (read John Roosa's Pretext for Mas Murder - we know exactly what was behind G30)

This dude is soooooo far out of his league that irs comical and we are going to enjoy this video for a long time to come. I'm going to use him in a lecture as my example of Americans who think they're knowledgeable but don't know jack

Why Indonesia won't be on China side:
1. South China Sea conflict
2. The civilization anti to communism due to historical experience

Why Indonesia won't be on US side:
1. US mostly seen as the actor of the conflicts in Middle East, especially Palestine x Israel
2. US arbitrarily imposes penalties on other countries

Indonesia has played a very smart game.
They know that they can't changed their neighbors and hence a peaceful settlement between them e.g. China and Indonesia, will ensure lasting peace and prosperity.
But they do see US and Australia as a more imminent threats to their security and China as the lesser concern.
That is why the newly elected Indonesian President visited China first to build up the TRUST culminated by fmr President Joko Widodo.
USA strategy of naval blockade at SCS and now Strait of Malacca haa failed miserably.
ASEAn wanted a region of peace and non alignment but US has been pressuring them to choose a side but it backfired hence the tilt to China.

racism and oppression toward chinese descent was really severe during Soeharto's reign
even now, 26 years after his downfall, our government is still haunted by his cronies and that outdated ideologies

this in turn, cause many chinese descent to be china's fanatic worshipper

we'd immediately go study and work in china, taiwan or even singapore when served a chance

Indonesia will be wise to listen to political scientist John Mearsheimer, No country on earth should trust Americans. Or Kissinger, to be an enemy of US is dangerous, to be a friend is fatal. Don't make the mistake of many EU countries, like Germany. The CIA blew up enemy Russia's LNG and left friend Germany without power, collapsing their industries. Germany
realize their mistake and no longer bow to the US. But its a bit late.

Really great video and analysis of Indonesia! Indonesians also have another sayings: "It is better to have rain of stone in our own country rather than to have rain of gold in other countries".
So Indonesians generally rarely leave the country forever, most just studying abroad or working then they will come back eventually. A lot of Indonesians abroad are forced by past regimes (Soeharto era) to do so, they can't go back to the country so they have no choice. Without those, I believe Indonesians diaspora will be even smaller.

I agree that most of Indonesians doesn't really think US or China as ally in terms of military or even economic one. Most of us regard them as partner. Like president Jokowi said, we welcome anyone who wants to invest. Indonesians have been taught since elementary school of our stand in International politic: Free and Active. Free in a sense that we will never ally ourselves with other power and active in terms of creating more peaceful world. So I believe it is ingrained in our brain.

As the people currently stands, Western alignment for Indonesia is somewhat unlikely since Indonesia is majorly muslim and openly rejects relations with Israel and aligns themselves with Palestine. US involvement in Middle East might make things difficult, as the people would reject the relations between the two governments. As of China, as it currently stands the people has much more favourable opinion of China than the US, therefore alignment with China is more likely than the US

With China rising, you're going to have to pick and stand on one side or get yourself strong enough to try fight China alone.
ASEAN countries are not capable to fend off a Chinese invasion and trust me, after Taiwan, they're next.
The South China Sea is already a goner at this point and ASEAN can't even do anything about it.
The common Chinese civilain perspective on Singapore and Malaysia nowadays is they're going to be a part of China sooner or later regardless if they like it or not, with hopes of reunifying Okinawa first and mainland Japan later. Vietnam, they'll bow down later to their strong commie big brother and the Philippines is a joke. Leave South Korea to Kim to rule and they'll bow down to China in the end.
Don't ask me what the CCP fed to their people, that's the sentiment the common Chinese folks had on the world these days.
The sentiment is getting so close to the Third Reich that if you swap a swastika on the Chinese flag right now it won't look any different to 1933.
