So this is something that always bothers me in the Colleen Ballinger discussion. The idea that kids and adults can't be friends, that any association between adults and kids who aren't directly related to them must be predatory, is not only incorrect, but dangerous. I would go so far as to say children SHOULD have adult friends. It's important to have older role models and people who listen to them - especially if their guardians and the other adults close to them can't be relied on, or are outright abusive.

As for minors being in a group chat, if the topics aren't inappropriate, that in itself should not be seen as a bad thing. I'm in more than one Discord that includes teenagers. We keep things clean and the mods watch like hawks, and so far no one has behaved inappropriately. These healthy interactions are possible, and should be encouraged, actually, because socializing with adults is an important preparation for adulthood.

Bottom line is, Ballinger's crime wasn't talking to children or being friends with children. She was NOT a friend to these kids. She was an abuser.
