In this video, I describe 3 major common knee injuries. The 3 injuries are the ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament), MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament) and the Meniscus. The ACL is the main stabilizer of your knee. It connects your shin bone (tibia) to your femur. This injury mostly involves sudden changes of direction with stop and start motions. The MCL is a thin flat band which connects your tibia to your femur. It prevents your knee from going inward. The meniscus is the cartilage between the femur and tibia. The meniscus acts as a preventative cushion when you land on your feet. This injury mostly involves sudden pivoting and twisting motions.
These injuries are more common in sports (football, basketball, volleyball, soccer and etc.) than anywhere else. If you injure the ACL, MCL and medial meniscus, this specific injury is referred to as the “Unhappy Triad.” You have different severities of each injury, which are grades 1, 2, 3. Each severity has a different plan of care and repair/treatment.
