As an elec engineer, it pains me you brain wash people into thinking all these "bad things" are going to happen when people install their heat pumps.

There is a reason why you get a comissioning engineer to do the installation so you don't have ANY problems with the kit, same for gas boilers. Not some regular joe like you to think everything will go bad and "not to bother"

The ASHP that was installed in my small cottage almost 9 years ago has never worked properly - it was installed cheaply by a cowboy contracted by my local authority - I’m in rented accommodation. The person utterly wrecked my house systematically room by room and installed the wrong sized radiators all in the wrong areas. No insulation under the floor boards and left hot and cold pipes touching and crossing. The noise from the pipes was so horrendous that i moved out of my bedroom 7 years ago. My landlord has refused to take responsibility so I’m taking them to court now.

How the HELL does the UK government expect ordinary British Citizens to afford to buy an air pump at approximately £8,000 (with government grant) + upgrading the insulation of their homes (to reduce heat loss)… WHEN A RAPIDLY GROWING NUMBER OF HARD WORKING HOME OWNERS CANNOT EVEN AFGORD TO PUT ENOUGH FOOD ON THEIR TABLES NOW??? 😡

If the UK government pass their unfair evil, ‘energy bill’, and FORCE EVERYONE to rip out our existing heating…Then I predict that Britain will see riot’s that will make the Poll Tax riots look like a kid’s tea party!

Thanks for a very informative and well presented video. I think heat pumps ( aka electrical heaters ) are largely not a good choice. As you say, there is NO point in replacing a good gas heating system with a gas-to-electicity heating system. They pretend they are more "efficient" because they knowingly ignore the efficiency of generating and transmitting the electricity. When it's -5 outside the COP will drop to something like 1.5 and you are LESS efficient that directly burning gas.

This YT channel is British and is targeted at the British building industry which has different infrastructure, heritage, standards and policies to other countries. Comments from contributors outside of the UK need to understand that what works for them won't necessarily work in the UK. So derogatory remarks about the presenter and other posted comments are significantly less than helpful.

" Heat Pump Secrets They Don't Want You to Know". What are the "secrets" and who are "they."? You are constantly saying throughout the video " it's not just me saying this, it's in the manufacturers literature". So, the manufacturers are not keeping any secrets. They are telling us how to install one properly and what to expect (based on decades of experience). They very much DO want us to know. I can only conclude that the "They" you are referring to are unqualified incompetent "tradespeople" who are not carrying out the proper calculations, preparation and installation procedures according to the manufacturers instructions and blaming the heat pumps for their incompetence when it doesn't work well. The problem isn't with heat pumps, it's with poor skills and inefficient houses. And it's not as if we haven't been told. My Mum's heat pump was twenty years old when she moved into a care home. She didn't even know where the controls were. it just worked. The house was the same temperature inside every day of the year no matter how cold it was outside and she had low bills. I have seen other very good videos of yours. This one doesn't do you justice. Instead of putting down heat pumps, you should be raising awareness of what is needed to get the best out of them rather than trying to save face in a losing argument.

I live in Vancouver BC Canada, and have natural gas to my home, as do the majority of residents here. The Provincial Government is pushing Air sourced heat pumps to all residents, including installation grants. For residents without natural gas, it seems that heat pumps decrease their electricity bills (they formerly used electric baseboard heat), but people that had natural gas forced air furnaces and switched to air heat pumps have less heat and the electricity bill for heat is much higher that their previous natural gas bill. I believe the Provincial Government wants us to use less NG, so they can sell it for a greater price to out of Province users. A journeyman electrician friend of mine installed an air heat pump 10 years ago, took out the duct work for the forced air NG furnace, and has regretted it since the first winter.

If you have a system that works well and you are happy, keep using that system. When making changes to something like a heat pump, do your homework so you have a better chance at spotting a bad installer because they are a dime to the dozen in the HVAC industry who will likely install undersized unit just to make a sale and pretend you don't exist when you are cold at night:)

If you buy cheap. Also gets shit. Then the fault is not in all manufactured devices. There is quality. And that shit. If you need some space, you need to heat it because it's cold outside. The importance of insulation is obvious. It doesn't matter how you heat it. A quality device only needs 230v voltage. A 10A fuse is enough. Which it uses to function. But it's hard to say what kind of amateurs have installed cheap crap. And what kind of seller was this cheap crap bought from. And what can be said about power consumption. Year 2022. 365 days. of which about 10 days HP did not heat. And it didn't cool down. Otherwise, it warmed the winter and cooled the summer. 24/7/365. Electricity consumption for the whole year was 1769 kWh. Now 2023 to this moment in the same way. And the electricity consumption so far is 1262 kWh. The summer was not so warm. So it didn't take that much cooling. But it has been cold before. So heating has been needed. It might be worth getting a high-quality device intended for the north. And not cheap crap that doesn't work anywhere. And a truly professional installer. If you have a device worth about 2000e. price over or under. Too expensive. Then you have to look for other solutions.

I think the technology in some regions of the world works fine, much like solar panels and wind turbines. However, when I went to college in Manitoba, my HVAC Instructor who worked 30 years in industrial engineering, said in Manitoba geothermal heat pumps work well to stabilize the temperature in a house which allows for supplementary heating to bring individual rooms up to comfortable temperatures. However, he did say Manitoba was possible to get cold enough to render an Air to Air Heat pump useless and at that point, the entire heating would be conducted on electric heat alone. Manitoba can get down to temperatures with the wind chill to -55 and in more northern climes colder. This is generally the air temperature in the province that gets this cold and thus the air-to-air heat pumps will no longer be able to evaporate their refrigerant and draw then expel that heat into the house.

There are a lot of advances we never really see being marketed to the public when it comes to energy efficiency, such as Aerogel.

What a lot of negativity regarding all the guidance in the installation instructions. Any installation instructions will include things to avoid and why. Do the same list of dos and don'ts for a gas boiler and include the possibility it could demolish your house and the neighbor's in a gas explosion leaving dead bodies and rubble all over the road. Such things are rare if you install and maintain properly. There's no need to make it sound like all the warnings are likely to happen. They are not if the manual is read.

So heat pumps blow out cold air. What happens when you have the heat pump for one building facing the heat pump for the next door neighbor. Sounds a bit self defeating, especially with multiunit strata housing.

I love this scam, as none of the guys pushing this rubbish talk about where the electric comes from, as if it is out the sky for nothing like magic. The basic fact it is a massive fridge working backwards with a very small output in regards to running your home still costs. They mention low running temperatures, so if you have 2 weeks for a kettle to boil to make a cup of tea it amount to the same and heat pumps are for you. They also seem to forget condensing boilers are designed to run high temperatures as fast speeds, with a lowest waste output as possible, at around 98% efficient clean combustible gases. That is better than your average present petrol / diesel car emissions. 55 years in the heating game both commercial and domestic tells me you still do not get something for nothing that is any good or useful. The old night storage heaters have a better and cheaper output with little to no massive install payments required. Not forgetting of course for ever install plus an electric car / family all have to be catered for by the mains grid, which will only increase in cost as that has to be nearly completely rebuilt if only for the charging points required. Which at the minute for long distance working, loaded vans are just not there at all, yet.

I know this is an old bump but this 40000 premature deaths per year sounds grim but when you read the report it’s talking about people having days less in their life not suddenly dropping dead at a young age. It’s also not just about boilers it’s air pollution in general from everything like cars etc but it doesn’t factor in what life improvements and longevity is gained from having a warm house, travelling by affordable cars etc it’s a biased one sided analysis. If we took away these pollutions right now with a click of the fingers other causations would impact premature dying far more as will diving in with ineffective solutions.
