Glad to see the little hive that could, still surviving. Gives me hope if I have an underperforming hive, not to give up on them, and keep feeding them.

How long were the winter-be-kind on before the bees completely ate them down?

Thanks David,

I'm intrigued about what you continue to edit out over your right (our left) shoulder. Secret queen rearing stuff? :)

The strong winter cluster does not have a problem to reach honey on frames if there is honey in the hive .... in this time of winter that should not be a problem if the hive was prepared correctly .... the problem egsists when the winter cluster is weak and sizes only a few frames ... the winter cluster moves very slovly, if the new brood starts the cluster stay on it and running out of food is very common situation if the temperature stays low for long period .. ..the sugar patty could be help in this case to bridge time when the weather gets better ..... we should leave only strong cluster in the autum and there is "no winter" for bees.

I checked on my 6 lang hives yesterday in upper 50s with 2 not flying at all. They were empty of bees. Wondering if they moved over as 2 hives were super packed full of bees and out of food in top boxes of both and no sugar bricks left. Gave those 2 the honey frames from the empty hives and put a few sugar bricks in each one. We have a week of colder weather now on the east coast. Lost 1 out 11 top bar colonies to mites. Didn't get the top bar hives checked yesterday as it got too windy. I can add food to them quickly this week on a sunny non-windy day without disturbing them.

im terrified to look in my hives lol. I have 4 that are single deeps, 2 of them being small colonies. My other 4 are double deeps. We are on day 3 of really cold weather in Ky. Down in the single digits and windchill creeping around 0. Fingers crossed, once this warmer weather rolls around imma pop the top and take a peek to see if i need to add more sugar bricks

Does the fact that they are eating so much candy this early in the winter mean they are out of honey or is it that they really like the candy?

The school I work at has a rooftop hive and they always keep it very small. They split it regularly. It overwinters every year in a single deep with just fondant and a protein patty. Southern quebec so usually a little colder than where you are.

Im fairly worried about my hive right now. We've had sustained -40C temps. Currently only -25C. We wrapped the outside and we have snow piled up around the hive to help insulate even more...Fingers crossed the winter bees survived, however I haven't seen any signs of undertaker bees bringing summer bee bodies out of the hive yet.
