Well, of course there is compelling evidence that her husband killed her, but the fact that she had “dalliances” with other men causes doubt. Perhaps one of those men was a murderer, and was never known to police and as such, was not investigated. But if she filed for divorce, that would have been announced publicly and his first wife would have found out of his bigamy, and all the problems that would have entailed, as it actually did.

*It may be too late for justice, but it’s never too late for truth*. John Loftus

It is speculation that Sotton was haunted by Maimie’s murder. He may well have been but there is no actual evidence of it. It was the charge of bigamy that brought his world tumbling down around him. He lost his wife and son and his well paying career came to a grinding halt.

I do wonder if the imprisonment for the bigamy charge gave his wife an opportunity she may not have otherwise had. If Sotton was abusive toward Maimie, there is no reason to think he was any less abusive toward his wife. One must wonder if Mrs. Sotton had remained in the marriage because she wanted to or if she had stayed out of fear. Most people would be surprised to find the number of women that have been threatened by their partners if they leave the relationship.

Giving the manner in which the body was hidden, premeditated murder seems very likely. From where we sit today, there is no way of knowing if Sotton was suffering from a guilty conscience or was just bitter at having his facade of respectability stripped away.

Thank you for the story and the artfully way it was presented. You have a new fan.

The discovery of a murderer, even after his death, may allow for the blocking of his spirit from reentering this world 🌏

Not sure my friends in Penarth would like their town described as a suburb of Cardiff, but perhaps it was classified as such back then. I'm familiar with this story and your telling of it is very good. Thank you

George looks a bit like Stan Laurel. Regardless, they each had such a good life going funny how people will throw away comfort and stability for infatuation.

people are just self. it's only when something happens to us, we will want anybody to help, but with someone else it not important.
in any case, one believe that they got away or unjustly escape but everyone has to face and answer to what they have done to their maker(God)

I just love your description of how George was dogged by the memory of his crime. I agree that people’s wicked deeds slowly chip away at them the rest of their lives. I’m glad he died rather miserably and that Maimie got the spotlight in the end.

These stories have taught me that it was very dangerous to be a women up to the recent past. Not saying ppl aren't subjected to abuse now, just pointing out that wealth or a woman's social status was really unimportant if she got in the way of someone with a murderous agenda.

I will never understand the mind of a bigamist. I was related to someone who committed bigamy. It is selfish ness that drives them. Her life was cut short because of this selfish creep. Heartbreaking.
