So what do you think? Should Japan allow dual citizenship and why?

It's kinda the same with bringing your parents to Japan if you went through Naturalization. It's still surprises me that this is a thing, but even after Naturalization, you are not allowed to bring your parents with you long term even you have a proof that you can support them here and not bring burden on the financial system. You only allowed to bring one parent if you have proff that they can't support themselves. Alright, then I have no choice as to come back to my country in that case.

This dumb gaijin doesn't understand that the Japanese speak to foreigners in English because 99% of the time, foreigners speak English.
Its gross how foreigners all over the world insist that they should be accepted as a natives, when there is no inherent reason they should. Its not anyone's right, govt, sovereign, inherent or even god given.

This is not true. Every Japanese citizen knows that if they naturalize in another country, they automatically lose Japanese citizenship and most do so and try to hide it. For example, if you live in the U.S as a permanent resident, you have to report it to the Japanese embassy and even if you don't, they will ask for your green card if you need help from the embassy, such as with a passport renewal, and if you only have a green card, everything is fine and you will get a new passport, but they will mark you as a future suspect for naturalization so you will be in files , If you use the embassy again and can not present your green card but a U.S passport, which means you have been naturalized, they will report it to the Gaimusho - Ministry of foreign affairs and you will automatically lose your Japanese citizenship. If you get caught, you lose it, if not, you keep going until you get caught. It's that simple.but as long as Japanese law does not accept dual citizenship, one day you will get caught and that will be the day for you ,so take your shot .lol

Another solution is simply get a green card in one country and passport in another. Ain't that difficult. Frankly, you'd be dumb to want to pay the JP income tax rate. LOL.

Nothing complex about this issue. For over a thousand years, JP people want to stay homogenous. So their policies simply reflect that. Frankly, it's a slow suicide due to the decline in birthrate. Young people can vote the old xenophobic farts out of office, but they don't because they're lazy, have no balls, and do nothing but complaint.

I think it's silly that Japan doesnt want to allow dual citizenship. On one hand you're handing out Visas for skilled workers and foreigners to try helping with the Japanese economy and also trying to bring in people who will marry Japanese people to combat the falling birth rates but then any children born to these couples arent allowed their birthrights? Like if I wanted to marry a Japanese woman and as a proud American who loves his rights, I'm fine with staying just an american citizen, but the kids I would have will have to pick only one? I thought you guys wanted to bring in people willing to marry not honey pot them into banging out a couple kids and dipping. Thats what you're going to get if you just want foreigners to come breed with Japanese women and not give them any ability to dual citizenship in Japan. Just a whole bunch of single moms cause the fathers weren't willing to give up their citizenship.

Well it is really wrong logic, in law first government says you should have only One passport, so when You are trying to take that passport You should give up all passports You had before, in second You still can after taking that new passport go to another country who accept Dual passport system or more, and apply for it. That's mean, first country passport is one passport system, then second country passport is dual. In this cases most of the time first country doesn't even know about your second passport until You tell them, and this passport You use for buying land, house, bank account and other but not travel. In near future all airports will be robot scanner as in some places already has for natives, You don't talk to human so no negotiation needed. After all everybody is happy with new technology ! If you have dual passport just use it smart.

Interesting, sounds like a similar problem to what Germany had until a recent reform to fix it. You could inherit two nationalities through your parents, but in some situations you might have had to decide which one to keep once you reached legal adulthood at 18.

The United States doesn’t recognize dual nationality, if you have US citizenship you have no other as far as the USA is concerned but they don’t restrict your personal freedom if another nation does allows it.

I lived in Japan from the USA for 5 years on a long term visa, while working for a law firm. I left at the 5 year mark due to double taxation kicking in at that point - both countries at that point inflict world-wide income taxation. This is a big problem for US citizen professionals working in Japan. Imagine having to pay taxes in Japan even for money in a Roth IRA or 401k. Japan and/or the USA need to rethink their taxation policies. I talked to many ex-USA citizens who dropped US citizenship in Japan simply because of the taxation problem.

I respect Japan's rejection to Globalization. It is incorrect to force every country to become America or Europe. Japan has every right to remain who it is. However, I do hope there is a better solution to the dual citizenship issue.

Interesting how similar Germany and Japan are on these topics.
We also have to give up our nationality when taking on another while (some) foreigners are nowadays allowed to keep theirs.
Everyone speaking English as default to foreigners.
And everyone non native being labelled as "Ausländer" (gaijin, "Person from outside the land", regardless of how long they or their family have been living here)

I was born in Japan from a Japanese mother and French father and at the age of ~5, I went to France and lived there for almost 20 years. Nobody ever asked me anything even though i knew about this "law"/ "rule". Even when going to the Japanese embassy to renew my Japanese passport after my 20s, the Japanese officials of the Japanese embassy in France didn't ask me anything particular because they know in France every double−nationality person keep both their French/Japanese citizenship. You cannot lose your French nationality unless you're a convicted terrorist or something.
Even though i had to choose, I will choose Japanese since I know how it is hard to get. In France, they don't even bother trying to do something over illegal criminal immigrants. So I know I will never risk anything in France without French passport.

I think if Japan allows citizens of Japan who naturalize in other countries to hold dual nationality but still requires people naturalizing in Japan to give up other nationality, then it looks unfair. If Japan allows dual nationality for emigration, then it would need to allow dual nationality for immigration as well to be fair.

It's very interesting that here in Germany we are so used to having people of various different cultures living as a legal German, that we actually got used to put more emphasis on the behavior and culture of a person than their visual attributes. For example, if a seeming foreigner speaks perfect German and acts in German traditions, you'll often find that Germans accept and regard them higher or like them more than genetically pure Germans.
And it makes sense, as that person willingly shows you, that he respects German culture and obviously likes it so much, that he adopted it. Meaning the person makes a statement "I want to get along with you" - and obviously, who wouldn't like that?

Ответить
@SuperNovaRider
@SuperNovaRider - 24.12.2023 04:08

I found the statement of the foreign woman about Japanese nearly always assuming the non-Japanese looking people to be unable to speak Japanese and therefore not even attempting to talk to them in Japanese mind blowing. In Germany most people speak very good English and also some French and other languages, too. But we still talk to obvious foreigners in German first, because we ourselves can often speak multiple languages.
So to Germans there is no reason to assume the foreigner/tourist can't speak German.
And here is probably where the problem lies at. Most Japanese can only speak their native language. It's mostly the younger generations that also speak or are interested in foreign languages. So only can imagine a foreigner speaking Japanese, since they as Japanese, also speak foreign languages.

Basically, dual nationals must decide by the age of 21 whether to choose Japanese nationality or nationality of another country.
In the future, I think it will be difficult for people who have managed to maintain their dual nationality by circumventing legal holes to maintain their Japanese nationality.

I would fully support if Japan changed to dual citizenship. Would gives my kids, two who are half Japanese and one who is native Japanese, a better chance to embrace their Japanese heritage. I myself want to get my British and Irish citizenship and know I can without any problems.
