The blank look Snake gave the crowd as they happily applauded for him. He didn’t want to be there. He was rewarded for something he didn’t want but was forced to do…kill the woman he loved most in the world.

Never has a game's ending claimed you've won, but felt more like you've lost in the end. Snake accomplished his mission, but the cost was too high for him. He was lied to and used by the government he served faithfully to kill his mentor and then turn around and claim she betrayed her country. The look of sorrow and contempt on him as he takes the medal shows you he's no longer the same man we've seen through the game. He's a broken man and his views have become twisted by what he went through. Sure, a nuclear threat was averted but in the end, all it did was create a massive ripple effect where more tragedies and deaths happen because of what the US government did to try and get the Philosopher's Legacy back.

must've had some kind of Mandela effect, but the way I remember this scene going down was after the president gives him the medal, he holds his hand out for big boss to shake. big boss refuses and instead simply stands at attention, looks straight ahead, and salutes the president until he's dismissed.
I actually would have liked that ending a lot better, because it showed how big boss did what he did because it was his duty as a soldier and despises the U.S. for what they ordered him to do. his refusal to shake the president's hand and saluting sends the clear message that he's only willing to give the president the bare minimum expected from a soldier in the presence of their Commander-in-Chief.
it could also be somewhat of a mockery of the president and the pentagon, sardonically assuming the role of an unthinking, obedient killer who does their duty, falls on their sword when ordered to, and would never do something as unprofessional as shaking the president's hand. almost as if saying "This is what you wanted, right?"

This ending and mgs4 were emotional to say the least. My favourite franchise

I cried in 2004 when I shot the boss. I cried again in 2023 when snake salutes the boss tombstone. They really don't make games like this any more

I went right back and played Metal Gear on my NES. Though not the MSX version , I just wanted to keep the story going. And at that time , that was the next chapter.

It’s been close to half my life since this game came out, and those lines still give me chills.

I swear, no matter how many times I finish Snake Eater, that ending will always bring tears to my eyes.

Without a doubt my favorite MGS game. I was blown away by the survival mechanics and storyline as a kid when I played it after MGS2 back in 2005

The Boss is probably the strongest female protagonist we will ever know.

MGS 3 is so overrated. MGS4 is the greatest game of all time. Solid Snake is so much more superior than Big boss.

1970: The U.S. branch of the Philosophers changes its name to the Patriots.
That gets retconned into being called "Cipher" when Peace Waker is released.
1971: Big Boss establishes FOXHOUND
And THAT gets retconned into happing in the late 80s/early 90s when Phantom Pain is released.

Man, the remake's gonna need to update those to reflect the changes, won't it?
