How did they get the pigeons to "home" on an ever shifting battle field?????

I have got two pigeons who sit by the window sill which is too narrow for birds to put their talons on, They have been coming to my window for about 3 years now and they perch up on a small rectangular hole just opposite to my window in another building. They have laid eggs over the last two years but none of their offsprings could survive as babies usually crawl up to the end of the hole and usually fall down. I have arrange for a small drawer by taking it out from my computer table so that we could sit in it and have food water and lay eggs. I could send you a pic but I can't upload it here. Is there a better way to save such pigeons. Unlike your pigeons they are not pets and not mine but they trust me, they respond to me when I tell them that I have laid grains for them to feed on and sometimes they also enter my bedroom when I am not around or sleeping but fly away when I wake up or enter the room, hence, I understand that they do not want to become my pets. What to do to save their eggs and babies?
