In this episode of DJs BrewTube, I will review a beer brewed in honor of Initiative 71 in Washington DC, DC Brau & Oskar Blues Smells Like Freedom IPA. DC Brau & Oskar Blues Smells Like Freedom IPA is a newly canned brew that clocks in at 7.0% ABV. DC Brau & Oskar Blues describe Smells Like Freedom IPA as follows:

"Smells Like Freedom is our first collaboration with Oskar Blues. The 7-percent IPA — which is being brewed both at Oskar Blues and at DC Brau — is a nod to D.C.’s Initiative 71, the marijuana-legalization measure approved in November and expected to take effect early 2015.

"It seemed to be a connection we had between the two [places]," DC Brau Co-Founder and CEO, Brandon Skall says, noting Colorado’s own marijuana legalization."The idea was to make a beer that, obviously, does not have cannabis in it but sort of could emulate that flavor or aroma profile as closely as possible, being that hops themselves are so closely related to cannabis."

The one-time-only beer, which Skall says should be "super dank," will be released at Meridian Pint on St. Patrick’s Day and will also be available in six-packs of cans, both at the brewery and in the D.C. market. Some kegs of Smells Like Freedom will make it out to Maryland and Virginia, too."

DC Brau & Oskar Blues Smells Like Freedom IPA WRITTEN REVIEW:

A - DC Brau & Oskar Blues Smells Like Freedom IPA pours super a hazy amber gold color, with a one finger head of tight kaki bubbles. Nice lacing is left behind as the head dissipates and plenty of alcohol legs were observed.

S - In you face front to back with big dank hop resin notes, grapefruit, pine, peach, citrus notes, slight malt sweetness all rounded off and totally surrounded by pine / herbal dankness. Damn, this a freaking dank hop aroma tank. No alcohol is detectable in the aroma, it is totally hidden by dankness and hops.

T - Follows nose to a ( T ). In you face front to back with big dank hop resin notes, grapefruit, pine, peach, citrus notes, slight malt sweetness all rounded off and totally surrounded by pine / herbal dankness. Damn, this a freaking dank hop aroma tank. No alcohol is detectable in the taste, it is totally hidden by dankness and hops. It is important to note that though hoppy in aroma and flavor this is not a super bitter tasting beer.

M: Medium full body with spot on carbonation. Super easy to drink with a nice smooth, dry finish. This beer is dangerously drinkable.

O: DC Brau & Oskar Blues Smells Like Freedom IPA is a very well done colab beer and is as dank as advertised. It is important to note that though hoppy in aroma and flavor this is not a super bitter tasting beer. There is actually its own sort of big hop flavor and dank balance in the flavor. I really enjoyed this on and hope that they brew it again some day.
