Carry Elwes smoking a cigar prior to battle is so badass.
ОтветитьI hope that we don't have to do. It again
ОтветитьOne of my favourite movies and soundtracks respect from Ireland 🇮🇪
ОтветитьThe music is just beyond epic
Ответить“A deep man believes that the evil eye can wither, the heart’s blessing can heal, and love can overcome all odds.” Powerful quote!!
ОтветитьThe bravery on both sides lining up into columns and marching into withering fire. First you're harassed by round shot, explosive shot in your ranks. As you get closer the cannons would switch to grape and canister shot as your columns squeezed together due to the loss of others. As you continue to march forward with more and more of your friends falling and the columns collapsing in more massing together you are not only being fired upon by cannons with canister shot and grape shot but now the line you are intending to assualt pours their full weight into your company with their musket line in a full volley. Such a horrific & tragic thing to have to be subjected to especially marching across a field scattered with the dead, dying and those gravely injured moaning in pain, begging and pleading from help as you march by on the way to your own possible demise.
ОтветитьAntietam was the highest casualties in a single day of the civil war. September 17, 22,000 casualties.
Ответить"As the old fellows did in The [American] Revolution." AKA: The [British] rebels standing against the current government of that time. Funny how Shaw didn't see Federalism was more contrast than comparison. Fortunately, he was on the right side of history.
ОтветитьThe scene that was hard to watch is when they show Matthew Broderick getting treated for a minor injury but the look on his face as they show Surgeons trying to hold down a union soldier while trying to amputate his leg then hearing him crying please don't cut anymore 😭😭😭😭 was absolutely heartbreaking. can't even imagine how many amputations were done in the civil war or how traumatized the soldiers must have been. I hope Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, Denzel Washington and others got Emmys for their incredible performances
ОтветитьAll those men laying dead or dying on that field were someone's son, father, or husband. So sad seeing carnage and death all around you.
ОтветитьI love the movie and the scene is amazing but it’s sort of an off strategy to just walk straight forward…
Honorable and symbolic it may be but if you want to win a war perhaps don’t get all of your men so blatantly shot down?
Seeing this movie makes me want to take a trip up to Boston and see where Col Robert Shaw grew up. I want to see the 54th Massachusetts memorial and pay my respects. They said that there are letters that Shaw written during his service that are preserved. I like to see that. ❤🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
ОтветитьI'd take my chances at Gettysburg's final battle before ever fighting at Antietam. Fucking bloodbath and massacre on both sides. Gettysburg was horrendous, don't get me wrong. But after visiting Antietam..... nothing compares to the horrific silence that lives there now.
And no I wouldn't really take my chances, one over the other. Both were horrible, just took place at a different time during the war. Antietam is just the scariest Civil War battlefield I've ever been to, no question.
The outcome of the Battle of Antietam, while not a win, was a draw. It stopped Lee from invading further into the North. It was just what Lincoln needed to sign the Emancipation Proclamation. It won the moral high ground and cowed the Brits from really helping the confederacy. The UK had emancipated their slaves some fifty years prior.
ОтветитьThis "Opening scene" of Antietam is a lot of bullshit the Union gave as good as it got in that battle and the damn Confederates were far from Super hero's and they were driven from Antietam Maryland😬! My Great Great Grandfather was there, Private Alonzo Knox Hayes 34th New York Infantry.
ОтветитьDear Mother, I hope you are keeping well and not worrying too much about me, you mustn't think that any of us are going to be killed for they are collecting such a force here that an attack would be insane
ОтветитьWe fought and killed each other, must be very difficult to portray that one day where we lost more in one day than any other day in war history.
ОтветитьVisiting Antietam and Gettysburg battlefields are on my bucket list
ОтветитьI have this movie on VHS.
One of the best war movies ever.
Europeans had the dumbest tactics .
ОтветитьI cant imagine the look on Robert Gould Shaw's face after surviving the battle of Antietam, The bloodiest day of combat in the Civil war. He probably never imagined that he was destined to lead the first African American regiment in the union army- the 54th Massachusetts, which he lead with great courage and honor. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
ОтветитьA good friend was an electrician on this film. He didn't know who Morgan Freeman was and thought he was a stuntman because of his skill at the hand-to-hand fighting.
ОтветитьGENERAL SHERMAN SAID..WAR IS HELL ..YOU CANNOT REFINE IT. .
ОтветитьHow I wish me.. others..the Facebook social media generation..US would watch this today on Thanksgiving day As I am currently...alone .all alone but THANKFUL THANKFUL !!!
ОтветитьGeneral Lee commented after the Battle of Fredericksburg ...It is WELL that war is so awful ....lest we grow TOO FOND...of it...Dec...1862....
ОтветитьJames Horner is, in My Considered Opinion of the Top 3 Film Composers of our Time. It saddens Me Deeply that He Passed. I am certain that He would have Written More Great Film Compositions. He is My Favorite as I grew up with many of his Scores such as The Wrath of Khan and this one Makes My Heart Ascend whilst Weeping at it's Sheer Inspiring Beauty which I have never Heard it's Equal to this Day. Thank You Mr. Horner for This Film's Music. May You Be Forever Immortalized through Your Music as The Classical Greats have been.
ОтветитьGod damn! This scene gets me every time. So beautifully shot. Then followed by pure carnage. Just like Antietam really was. Breathtaking. Really drove the battle home.
ОтветитьThe confederate army was kicking our asses for the first three years and then thank god the tide turned
ОтветитьCivil War army tactics on both sides, were just insane ! Watching the slaughter of so many, when differing tactics could have saved so many, is just so hard to watch. Both sides were guilty of using outdated ideas & tactics. What a shame. -------------MJL< 76 y/o
ОтветитьExcellent opening, probably one of the better depictions of the heat of battle during the War Between the States. Even if the film as a whole is vapid Unionist propaganda.
ОтветитьI’ve only seen clips of the movie. This scene explains Shaw in later scenes perfectly. It’s the admiral Kane philosophy, except without the rape, torture, murder, betrayal, raiding, impressment, theft, and slavery.
Ответитьwhat a waste war is.....great movie
ОтветитьWhen the commanders head explodes and his cap goes flying straight up into the air! People in the movie theater gasped for air.
ОтветитьMy great grandfather was csa here survived and watch lee sign the surrender papers at approx saul Mercer of the 50th Georgia infantry regiment
ОтветитьCombat and all that is wrapped up in it, is an ugly beast.
Ответитьif you think about it the civil war was not that long ago. the last veteran of the war Albert Woolson died in 1956 the last person alive born into legal slavery was peter mills (October 26, 1861 – September 22, 1972) think about it there are still people alive that have interacted with someone who fought in the war or was born as a slave.
ОтветитьI watched this once when I was a kid.
ОтветитьBest Civil War movie ever made. I’m surprised no one has made anything recent. Such fantastic stories from that time.
ОтветитьBattle of Antietam was the most brutal and deadliest battle in American history
ОтветитьThose letters home from the civil war hits different vice .......sending an email/ phone call to your spouse during the Afghan/Iraq war "biish don't be spending my money, and who was with you on that video tape, I swear to god, give me the strength"
ОтветитьMy Great grandfather was with the Union 8th Illinois Calvary under Col. John Farnsworth and was blown away by artillery fire.
ОтветитьUseless loss of life...
ОтветитьEverytime i watch a civil war movie/battle scene. I have to ask myself, who thought this military tactic/strategy was a good idea.
Heard a historian suggest that part of the reason the death toll was so high, was the military strategy wasn't up to pair to the military technology. Later in the, towards the very end they had the repeating rifle (prototype). That's a pretty big advancement from muskets
I am still Cavalry!!!! God bless the 54th Massachusetts.
ОтветитьCaptain Patrick Clooney, born in Waterford, Ireland, a member of the papal army of 1848 who fought for an independent Pope and later an officer in the New York 69th regiment, died for a United States of America leading his company at the Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862
