Balkan History: The Return of King Leka to Albania 1997

In the aftermath of the unrest in spring 1997, King Leka returned to Albania, calling for the restoration of the monarchy. A referendum was set to decide the fate of his cause. We followed King Leka throughout his campaign.
After losing the vote, he claimed electoral fraud. In protest, King Leka appeared in military uniform, armed, on Skanderbeg Square in Tirana. This led to a dramatic confrontation, with exchanges of gunfire between his supporters and the police.
