Cameron even factored in that they could not animate the skeleton fluidly, so he scripted in the damaged leg to make the jerky movement more believable. He is really good. Some of the FX may have aged badly, but they are still very effective.

Due to technological limitations, the Terminators move ugly but thanks to technological advances they now move like a normal person.

My only problem with this entire movie is how easily the crippled and limping Terminator was so easily able to catch up. It bothered me as a kid and it bothers me now.

Man I remember when I watched this in theaters 1984. I'm in high school now.

There's a certain kind of uncanny valley effect that you can only really achieve with physical props and stop motion that you just can't replicate with computer graphics (unless you do it like you would a G-Mod animation), and it works really well in horror films in particular. I think movies lost something when they did away with most practical effects, and the horror genre suffered for it more than any other.

To date, Sarah and Kyle barely being able to close the door with the Terminator literally inches away from getting them is one of the most tense things I've ever seen

People may mock the wonky stop-motion effects in this scene, but IMO I think it adds to the nightmare like horror element of this the first film.

Sarah was always strong, whether she realized it or not, but this scene she summons all that courage and strength that would go on to define her character in the sequel

I love how the T-800 is still having trouble walking after getting ran over by that truck. I’m sure the T-888 would have been pissed by that.

The second no is her realizing its still coming to kill her.

Imagine if the Terminator, after standing up with endoskeleton fully exposed, had said in damaged distorted Arnie voice, “Sarah Connor…”

In some cases with older movies, the stop-motion special effects may not age the best over time. If not outright look horrendous by today's standards. But here it certainly adds favorably to the T-800's inhuman presence. Very robotic and outright creepy. I wonder how many kids, or even adults, got nightmares from this back then?
