Splicing Fibre is nothing special and it's very easy if you have the equipment. I used to be a field engineer working on the backbone of the network and the equipment inside the street cabinets and my salary was like £33K. I am now a technician in an Equinix Data Center.

I know im late to the video but i did want to say a little on making your own fiber cables. Yes, splicing fiber requires a specialized fusing machine and its something the average guy wont do. However, its very possible to put terminal ends on fiber. The kits are usually under a 100 dollars and once you get the hang of it you can make up a termination in about 5 minutes. Its a bit of a learning curve but its a alternative to buying all premade cables.

Great video, but they don't just use repeaters to help the signal go further, they also use the much more efficient method of amplifiers, which are pretty cool.

I will be passing this video to our new Technicians. I have been doing Telecommunications for 24years now. Some of the information is more basic and general. But working in the data center capital of the world. I have stories to tell. But I started a Tech right out of high school. When I started most customers fiber circuits were 155Mbs (OC3), and 622Mbs (OC12). Now I install 10G, 100G, and 400G. The need for bandwidth has grown in the 24years. Also the more commonly use BIF (Bend Insensitive Fibers) reduces the micro bends.

Sorry to ramble but good video and I know I know a lot of the technical spec.

Also never look in the end of a fiber is a laser and will burn your eyes. Always use a light meter to measure the db levels.

I'm not an expert, i just started using fiber inside my home.
It looks like it's pretty easy and cheap to terminate and splice fiber with less than $100 from Amazon tools (could splicing). You need fiber strippers, cleaver and fast connectors or cold splices.
For lower attenuation (likely not relevant at home) you do fusion splicing and that's more expensive because the tool costs around $1k.

Experts: please correct me if I'm wrong

I managed to terminate 9/125 singlemode fiber cables, with fan out kits and a Chinese cleaver (under $100), even with 60 yr old eyes. Reason was, broadband was not available to my rural home but an adjacent property had it, so I trenched and buried 2000 ft of jacketed fiber to carry the gig speed internet LAN to house.

@NetworkChuck I am just installing and learning about fiber optic cables and another important topic concerning LC cables ar the verions of LC cables. There are LC/PC, LC/UPC and LC/APC which are not necessarily interchangeable. LC/PC is 90° connection LC/UPC seems to be polished more for better attenuation. LC/APC here the connection is done over an angled cut fiber optic. If you put a LC/APC into a port that should have LC/UPC or LC/PC you will get a huge attenuation and will only get a fraction (4%) of your throughput. That is the problem I am having with my provider at the moment. I put the wrong cable and instead of 25Gbit Internet I get about 1-2Gbit.

Awesome video. I am a fiber optic splicer/tester for a company in NYC. I am the supervisor for the department and we are contracted by Verizon and Altice to build there backbone networks underground in the Manhattan. I love to see videos explaining the tools and resources we use on a daily basis. I love your channel. I have tried some of the projects (running my own AI bot with Ollama through Docker for my kids to use when they need help with their homework) and learn much about other things watching your channel. Keep up the amazing work.

Its worth mentioning, if it hasn't been mentioned, that you should never look directly into the end of an energized fiberoptic cable. The light used in telecommunications is invisible so you wouldn't see anything anyway and it could potentially cause retina damage. It seems it would be human nature to look for the light if something might not be working for some reason.

A question. What would be if provider provides fiber to my router, but then it goes to switch via ethernet cable - will it loose speed to end users from switch? Or if modem is conencted directly to pc via ethernet, again it should loose speed? In order not to loose it, fiber should be used from provider directly to pc? But what if fiber is connected to wifi router, will it give more speed for wifi users?

I am a fiber technician, and make these fiber connector almost every other day. and it's not that difficult to make them, with right tools you can make them in minutes. Yes, those tools are expensive though, one will not get on amazon. Also, SFP are also called ONT (optical network terminal), converting signal from optical to electrical. Your course is amazing, learned lots of new things about network. Thank you so much for that.

You are confusing fiber cable a layer 1 tech with ethernet layer 2 protocom, both copper and fiber can carrie ethernet packets.

Fiber cables are used because they are cheap, but microwave links are actual faster than fiber cables.

Electricity travels as fast as light. The advantage of optical is bandwidth. It the frequency that allows so much data to travel in optical fiber. Optical computers are under development.
